The premiere of Graham’s important ‘Letter to the World’ took place on 11 August 1940, at the Bennington College Theater in Vermont. Martha Graham, Erick Hawkins, Merce Cunningham, and Jane Dudley were the original performers. The ballet was accompanied by the spoken poetry of Emily Dickinson; the title of the ballet is taken from a Dickinson poem which begins, ‘This is my letter to the World/ That never wrote to Me. . . .’

The present image was not made at a performance of the live ballet; rather, the photograph was taken in one of the studio spaces used by Morgan in New York City. It was Morgan’s custom to attend repeated rehearsals and performances of the dances she planned to photograph, and watch for significant moments that she would later re-create in a studio setting. In collaboration with the dancers, most especially Graham herself, Morgan would discuss the choreography, music, and philosophy behind each ballet, then focus on a small group of movements that would represent the essence of the work as a whole. Morgan called these selected moments of action ‘”instants of combustion’” (quoted in Aperture, Barbara Morgan, p. 7).

The legacy of Martha Graham in dance of the twentieth century is without parallel. Even those who have never seen a Graham ballet, however, are familiar with her work through Morgan’s photograph. In its perfection of lighting, its deft capture of the floating costume, and its evocation of Graham’s arrested, fluid motion, the photograph has become synonymous with not only ‘Letter to the World,’ but also with the world of modern dance." (Sotheby's "Photographs from the Collection of Joseph and Laverne Schieszler," Lot 1)
Chopin, Frédéric. Baker played Dora, a Creole Jamaican who falls in love with a French sailor and travels to France in pursuit of him. This comic operatic role firmly placed her in the 'Boulevard tradition' of legitimate musical theater and moved her beyond the tableaux, erotic displays, and medleys of the music hall. When he returned to France in 1893, he spent most of his time in Paris promoting his work and writing and illustrating Noa Noa, a fictionalized account of his Tahitian experience.

Set in a Tahitian landscape by the sea, the composition is divided into three horizontal bands. At the top, islanders perform a ritual near a towering sculpture. Like many figures in Gauguin’s Tahitian images, the monumental sculpture was derived not from local religion but from photographs of carved reliefs adorning the Buddhist temple complex at Borobudur (Java). In the middle band, three symmetrically arranged figures are placed against a field of pink earth in poses that may signify birth, life, and death. The woman in the center, formally linked to the sculpture at the top, is similar in appearance to other depictions of Tahitian females who Gauguin used to suggest the Christian figure of Eve in paradise. The lower portion of the composition evokes contrasting hues reflected in the water. Dated 1867 and with the ownership signature of its compiler, Elizabeth Tatham, on the first page. Elizabeth Tatham (b. 1849) was the daughter of George Tatham of Leeds, Yorkshire, a leather manufacturer and the Mayor of Leeds from 1879 to 1882. The very skilfully-executed drawings are initialed by Elizabeth Tatham and by another person with the initials G.T., possibly her father or a sibling. Highlights of the drawings include ink and watercolor hunting scenes, courting scenes, and society scenes with humorous captions. A particularly striking page displays a poem titled "Flirts in Hades," surrounded by appliquéd male and female faces with butterfly wings. Also included is a page of clipped signatures from Liberal politicians and personalities, including W. E. Gladstone, Lord Amberley (John Russell, Viscount Amberley), Sir Andrew Fairbairn, Sir Thomas Bazley, Baronet Sir H. J. Ingilby, the Dean of Carlisle (Francis Close), and many others, as well as several further pages of autographs and one page of clipped crests. From 1900 he worked in Prague with Antonín Dvořák (whom he possibly met through his friendship with the Bohemian Quartet in Vienna). His productivity diminished progressively in the following decades, during which European music underwent far-reaching changes. He died during the Second World War, in tragic circumstances: his Jewish origins made him subject to the persecutions of the Nazi police who occupied Turin during 1944; despite his 75 years he was to be sent to Germany as slave labour, but suffered a fatal heart attack at the moment of his arrest.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Verdi_2C_Giuseppe_sig_photo_Sinigaglia_12585.jpg?v=1722188370
12588-drum-afghan-pakistani-drum-made-of-artillery-shell
[Drum] Afghan-Pakistani Drum made of Artillery Shell

Visually striking drum composed of Afghan-Pakistani goatskin, plaster, vegetable dye, wire and sling fitted around a WWII artillery shell. 17.5"h.
