A signed card with a note on the verso from one of his managers, W.R. Northrup, noting that this is the first time Tom has tried to write and that he guided his hand.   Examples of Tom's \"mark\" appear on the market from time to time, but this is the first true autograph we have ever seen available.  Sold together with a complete 1866 issue of Harper's Weekly which includes a fine portrait of \"The Celebrated Negro Pianist.\"  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBorn enslaved and formally uneducated, his unique musical talent led to world tours, performances at the White House and an enthusiastic fan base that included Mark Twain. Now believed to be an autistic savant, during his amazing life this musical prodigy is reported to have learned to play more than 7,000 pieces, including standard classical and Romantic repertoire and many original compositions.  One of the earliest concert reviews published in the Baltimore Sun on June 27, 1860 announced that Tom was a phenomenon in the musical world \"thrusting all our conceptions of the science to the wall and informing us that there is a musical world of which we know nothing.\"  Mark Twain, a great enthusiast for Tom's playing, wrote in 1869 that Tom \"lorded it over the emotions of his audience like an autocrat. He swept them like a storm, with his battle-pieces; he lulled them to rest again with melodies as tender as those we hear in dreams; he gladdened them with others that rippled through the charmed air as happily and cheerily as the riot the linnets make in California woods; and now and then he threw in queer imitations of the tuning of discordant harps and fiddles, and the groaning and wheezing of bag-pipes, that sent the rapt silence into tempests of laughter. And every time the audience applauded when a piece was finished, this happy innocent joined in and clapped his hands, too, and with vigorous emphasis...Some archangel, cast out of upper Heaven like another Satan, inhabits this coarse casket; and he comforts himself and makes his prison beautiful with thoughts and dreams and memories of another time... In actuality a violent antislavery fanatic, Brown was convicted in 1859 of treason, inciting a captive rebellion, and murder in his abortive attempt to seize the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry and ignite an armed captive insurrection in the South. Yet through his trial and execution at Charles Town, Virginia, in December 1859, Brown became for many Northerners a martyr of the abolitionist cause. Here the artist shows Brown calmly descending the steps of the Charles Town jail, hands tied behind his back. \"Regarding with a look of compassion an enslaved mother and Child who obstructed the passage on his way to the Scaffold. --Capt. Brown stooped and kissed the Child--then met his fate.\" The strikingly madonna-like slave woman is seated on a stone railing, holding an equally Christ-like infant. One of Brown's guards reaches forward, about to push her away. In the foreground a mustachioed and elegantly uniformed soldier waits impatiently, hand on his sword hilt. Behind Brown a figure from the American Revolution, wearing a tricornered hat emblazoned \"76,\" watches with concern. The flag of the state of Virginia with the motto \"Sic semper tyrannis\" flies prominently above Brown's head. A statue of Justice, with its arms and scales broken, stands forgotten behind the railing at left. Before she was repaired in the Federal navy yard and commissioned again in 1864, she was was displayed in Philadelphia for the benefit of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, an organization which cared for thousands of Union soldiers as they passed through Philadelphia. They improved the phenol resins first developed by Leo Baekeland and eventually produced a material called condensite, a purer resin with fewer by-products (condensite refers to the condensation of phenol and formaldehyde which produces the resin).  The actual cylinder or disc record was never a blank of pure resin but a combination of cheaper materials for the base covered with a \"varnish\" of the hard recording medium. At the bottom of the container was a valve to draw off the hot liquid and a manhole cover attached by large bolts was at the top. The various elements of the mixture were pumped in and then condensed under pressure and at high heat. No publicity was given to this project or to this machine....A Robertson disc press was set up opposite the condensite mixer to press master records unto blanks and make copies. The press was hydraulically operated and could accommodate one disc at a time. A new master could be easily slid into the top part of the press. This machine could also press out a variety of other forms made from condensite....The product of this plating process was a negative, a matrix, of the master. This was used to make a submaster which in turn was used to produce a working master.
