Beaton, Cecil. (1904 - 1980). "The Chalk Garden" - Three Original Set Designs.

Three set designs for "The Chalk Garden" c.1955, ink, watercolor and gouache interior and exterior scenes on paper, for the Broadway theater version of the play, the extraordinary larger interior scene signed in ink 'Cecil Beaton' (bottom right) , verso with pencil inscription reading "Please return to Cecil Beaton, 8 Pelham Pl, London", edge tears and chips mainly to margins not affecting image, margins with scattered creasing affecting upper right corner and lower left corner of image, overall well-toned, image size 26 x 14.5in., paper size 30.5 x 22 in. Second scene (unsigned) is an interior titled "Detail of House Backing" containing graphite notes and memos including "Details Mawley Hall - Shrop[shire]", and a butler sketch, corner loss and folds, edge bumps and toning, paper size 22 x 15in., the third scene (unsigned) is an exterior titled "Detail of Verandah", drawn in 2 panels, contains graphite notes including "Please paint in false perspective", scattered  ink stains and toning, paper size 22 x 15 in. 

Enid Bagnold's play The Chalk Garden was first performed at the Shubert Theatre, New Haven on 21 September 1955 and received several Tony Award nominations. Beaton designed both the set and costumes for this production, which were both highly commended.
