Schumann, Robert. (1810–1856). Important Autograph Letter. . From the Collection of the great singer, Dietrich Fischer Dieskau. To Schumann's friend Henriette Voigt, about his friends and present musical preoccupations, noting whimsically that his whole wealth can be summed up in three names, alluding apparently to his unpublished 'Sehnsuchtswalzer' ('Longing Waltz') and to his 'Carnaval' op.9, praising his friend and describing her as an 'A flat Spirit.'

...Die Zueignung verdient und schätzt nur eine As dur Seele, mithin eine, die Ihnen gliche, mithin Sie allein, meine theure Freundin...

Schumann's 'three names' are those of his friends Henriette Voigt, the pianist Ludwig Schunke, and Ernestine von Fricken, the dedicatees, respectively, of his piano works op.22, op.7 and op.8. The opening of the unpublished 'Sehnsuchtwalzer Variationen' of 1833 was later used as the opening of the celebrated 'Carnaval' op.9. Schumann described the year 1834, which saw the first appearance of his Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, as 'the most important of my life.'

1 page (c. 12.3 x 21.1cm), integral autograph address-panel, later pencil annotation to same, traces of seal, no place or date [Leipzig, 4 September 1834], a number of small tears, repaired on verso, some affecting text and signature.
