Ignazio Pleyel.","description":"Scribal manuscript score in an unknown hand, most probably ca. late 18th century, oblong 8vo, 8.62 x 11.75 inches (22  x 30 cm.). 24 pp on hand-ruled manuscript paper.  The manuscript portends to include two sonatas for keyboard, with movements titled Andantino;  Andantino Grazioso;  Allegro;  Allegro Moderato with 2 Variations;  Rondo Allegretto;  and Rondo Allegro.  \u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eHowever, this appears to instead be a group of little transcriptions for keyboard written in different keys and with no connection between them. Following the order of the manuscript, the actual musical provenances are: The 2nd movement from the duet 501, the 1st from the string quartet 322, the 3rd from the string quartet 335, the 2nd from the string quartet 338, the 4th from the symphony 136 and the 2nd from the duet 523. In all cases, music composed never earlier than 1788, so with no arguments for proving the early Italian provenance possibly suggested by the titlepage. Thus these are evidently works copies from printed sources with keyboard transcriptions, like the Neapolitan by Marescalchi 'Dodici sonatine' or the related English by Harrison, 'Twelve easy sonatines', where can be found the majority of the pieces. \u003c\/span\u003eAt the same time, with the exception of the first, all the other excerpts contained inside are contained also in a manuscript preserved at the Conservatory of Brussels, Ms. 35366, which includes also pieces from Hüllmandel's op. 5, suggesting a probable Alsatian provenance in origin.  Light wear along edges, moderate staining and occasional foxing throughout, else fine. \u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"\"\u003eBorn in Austria, Ignaz Pleyel was the twenty-forth of his father's thirty-eight children. There were five performances, and five of the plates printed here were originally conceived as entrance tickets. On the morning of Wednesday 26 May 1784 at Westminster Abbey (where Handel is buried), 525 musicians and singers performed the Dettingen Te Deum, one of the Coronation Anthems, one of the Chandos Anthems, part of the Funeral Anthem, and a few shorter pieces. The next evening at the Pantheon a smaller group performed various songs and choruses, sacred and secular, four concertos, and an overture, and on the Saturday morning the full company returned to the Abbey to perform ‘Messiah’. So successful were the concerts in the Abbey that they were repeated in full the next week. The lavishly illustrated and finely printed volume recording the events was published under the close supervision of its dedicatee, the King.  The Italian engraver, drawer, and publisher Francesco Bartolozzi was, for a time, Engraver to King George III of England, and was a founding member of the Royal Academy. The deal fell apart; Tornell claimed to find the arrangements too complicated, though Piazzolla told Dedé that they were simple enough for [his son] Daniel to sing.\" \u003cbr\u003e\"Between [Piazzolla's] upward rise culminating with the artistic success of his Octeto Buenos Aires, and the turning point marked by “Adios Nonino”, the requiem to his father, who died in late 1959, there were two years of misty uncertainty, spent mainly in New York City, from February 1958 to June 1960....Piazzolla was struggling with the American dream. His recollections of it, bittersweet, hardly come up in the memoirs compiled by with Natalio Gorín. The portrait of Piazzolla's life in New York is somewhat blurry. Beyond the stories of those who knew or worked with him, his name hardly appears among press notices; even though these note some of his performances, he rarely gets a name check.... The great Piazzolla was, in fact, just another anonymous musician among the thousands who made a living in late-1950s New York, a golden age for studio work in the city. She apparently had a short-lived radio program \"En Casa de Yolande Tornell\" which was a broadcast of informal performances in her living room of \"numbers ranging from the classical to the popular in six languages.\"  Some of the present manuscripts also bear notations from various other performers, as well as a few markings evidently giving specific performance locations and dates (as noted above).\u003cbr\u003ePiazzolla was the greatest composer of the tango, which he transformed in the mid twentieth century, combining it with classical and jazz techniques to form the tango nuevo. The characteristic Argentinian instrumental colours, such as the use of the bandoneón, are enriched with \"classical\" orchestral instruments, counterpoint, chromaticism, novel instrumental forms and elements of jazz, especially jazz fugue.  Piazzolla studied with Alberto Ginastera in Buenos Aires and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, and collaborated with artists like the Chronos Quartet, Rostropovich and Milva.
