Gigli, Beniamino. (1890–1957). Signed and Stamped Passport, 1921-1928.
Original Italian passport of the important tenor, containing his photograph, signature, stamps and visas, and issued in Rome, May 22, 1921. The passport contains stamps from Italy, Germany, Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and the United States, dated 1921-1928 47 pp. Possibly lacking outer binding, some light wear, but overall fine. A remarkable document. 3.75 x 5.25 inches (9.8 x 13.3 cm). Together with a bifold supplementary passport document for Gigli's steamship departure from Havana, Cuba 1/29/27.
In lyrical and romantic repertory, many regarded Gigli as the legitimate heir of Caruso. He made his professional debut as Enzo in La Gioconda at Rovigo in 1914 and his Rome Opera debut as Faust in Mefistofele in 1916. He later debuted at La Scala in 1918 and first appeared at the Met in 1920, singing every season there until 1932 when he returned to Europe. The present full passport attests to his extraordinary and presumably exhausting International touring schedule from the height of his storied career.
