[Civil Rights] [Voting Rights]. Mississippi Freedom Summer 1964 Black Civil Rights Voter Drive Urban League Pin.

Original pinback button issued by the Urban League for their 1964 voter registration drive in Mississippi when about one thousand volunteer students from the North canvassed black neighborhoods there to get as many people to register to vote as possible. Although approximately 17,000 black residents had attempted to register to vote in the summer of 1964, only 1,600 of the completed applications were accepted by local registrars. Highlighting the need for federal voting rights legislation, these efforts created political momentum for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In near mint condition with a few blemishes and rust to the obverse. Issued by Keg. Ent. NY, measures 1-1/4" across.
