This lithograph was probably printed by Gallay in Geneva, but the 7 original lithographs in the portfolio were printed at ateliers in Paris, Zurich, and Geneva, and it is not explicitly stated which was printed where. It is unclear whether Hockney realized when he made the lithograph that the finished prints would have a vertical central fold; if he did, he decided cheekily to position his walking figure right in the centre of the sheet. Another cheeky element to this work is that Hockney must have known that Galerie Krugier also represented Alberto Giacometti, so this walking man is in part a witty tribute to that fellow artist.

Hockney, David. In the past decades critical responses to William's art have alternated between astonishment at pictures that are often as fresh and glowing as the day they were painted, and bewilderment that a twentieth-century artist could be seemingly untouched by revolutions in art from impressionism on. Published to coincide with the first full retrospective in almost a quarter of a century - and the first in London since 1942 - this catalogue contains new texts by leading specialists on the many facets of Nicholson's work. A series of scholarly texts and catalogue entries accompany the broadest display of his painting ever published in colour, as well as an account of the artist's well-known and considerable body of graphic work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Nicholson_William_Hockney_David_Bennett_TheArtofinscribed24219a.jpg?v=1749156575
24220-hockney-david-bennett-tony-four-hockney-books-from-the-collection-of-tony-bennett
Hockney, David.
