Hofmann, Josef. (1876-1957). Early Signed Cabinet Photograph.

Original Sarony of NY cabinet photograph of a very young Hofmann seated at a piano, signed and inscribed in fountain pen at the age of twelve as "Jozio Hofmann, Philadelphia, 17/2, 1888. In very fine condition and handsomely matted and framed. Very scarce, this early! 4.25 x 6.5 inches; 10.5 x 16.5 cm. Framed overall to 10 x 12 inches; 25.5 x 31 cm. 

Hofmann was a famed piano virtuoso, born in Poland, but raised in Berlin to encourage his musical career. Hofmann toured across Europe and culminated his concert tour in America between 1887 and 1888 with a10-week, 52-concert of the United States, which was facilitated by Henry Abbey and brought the child prodigy to major cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Baltimore. While he attracted enormous attention as a child prodigy of extraordinary ability during this tour, he withdrew from the concert platform in 1888, returning as a somewhat more mature artist in
1894 and, after frequent international touring, eventually settled in the US. Hofmann moved permanently to the US in 1926, after the outbreak of World War I. During his time in America, Hofmann became the first head of the piano department of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and later the director of the Institute in 1927 and remained so until 1938.
