Strauss, Richard. (1864–1949) [Barakovich, Edith. (1896–1940)]. Signed Photograph.

Sepia postcard photograph by Barakovich of Vienna, boldly signed by the composer under the image in blue ink, the verso addressed in manuscript, with a 10 Heller postage stamp and ink 1919 postmark. A short crease at the upper right corner, the verso toned, with remnants of old adhesives from having been mounted in an album, else fine.  5.25 x 3.25 inches (13 x 8 cm).

Edith Barakovich was a well-known celebrity photographer in Vienna and Berlin whose career was cut short by the advent of Nazism. She committed suicide in Casablanca in 1940, as her emigration to the U.S. was delayed again and again. The postmark dates this photograph from the first year of Strauss's tenure as principal conductor of the Vienna State Opera (1919 to 1924).
