"All good things-trout as well as eternal salvation-come by grace and grace comes by art and art does not come easy"
Two volumes, both in original dustjackets, including a very fine copy of the rare first edition, first printing and a second very fine signed copy of the first edition, second printing.
First edition, first printing. xiv, 217 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Dj with light strips of toning and very modest wear to the edges; small Missoula, MT ownership label to the inside front board, else internally very fine throughout.
First edition, second printing. xiv, 217 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed on the ffe by the author, "Missoula, Montana / To Ty Robinson, Husband of Jean Robinson, father of Laird Robinson, partner of Jim Gorlington, and, on his own, a pretty fair fly-fisherman, Norman Maclean." Very modest wear to the dj edges, else internally very fine throughout.
Norman Maclean's autobiographical novella of fly fishing and life draws upon his early years spent mostly in the Rocky Mountain region. Though critically acclaimed from the outset, the work received little attention until its adaptation as a major film, after which it achieved tremendous popular success. The immensely successful film was directed by Robert Redford and starred Brad Pitt, Craig Sheffer and Tom Skerritt. It went on to win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. In addition to the title story, this collection includes "Logging and Pimping and Your Pal, Jim " and "USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky." A rare and attractive set of two copies of this modern classic.
"[Maclean] would go to his grave secure in the knowledge that anyone who'd fished with a fly in the Rockies and read his novella on the how and why of it believed it to be the best such manual on the art ever written - a remarkable feat for a piece of prose that also stands as a masterwork in the art of tragic writing." (Philip Connors, The Nation).
