An incredible copy of the first jazz history book published in the United States, a collection of fifteen pieces written by nine enthusiasts, edited by Frederic Ramsey Jr. and Charles Edward Smith. The book has remained controversial for its often inaccurate and extravagant mythologizing of the story of early jazz.

The autographs in this copy were obtained by Don Meyer (d. 2005), a fireman who was a jazz enthusiast and amateur soprano sax player who befriended many of the artists and who would act as their informal chauffeur when they visited Seattle, Washington. His ownership signature, dated 1940, is on the inside front board.
