The recipient of the inscription was Herbert Marx Meyer (1903-1988), noted Detroit book collector who assembled a large collection of early 20th century literature. He corresponded with many of the authors of the time, and thus many of his books bear friendly and warm authorial inscriptions such as the present example.
The first novel by Thomas Mann,"Buddenbrooks" is the story of a German merchant family, closely resembling the author's family. Cited by the presenters of the Nobel Prize in Literature when awarding it to Mann in 1929, the present edition of the work - Volumes I and II combined in a single book, translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter - was published the following year.
