And, of course, many artists - in particular those from marginalized and/or brutalized communities - have long grappled in their work with these awful forces. In the terrifying moment in which our nation now finds itself, we find renewed urgency to this project. This 2-part exhibition explores the large twin themes of violence and death, both fertile realms for artists past and present. In some cases, they are related, in others, possibly not, but it is the burden of the art in this exhibition to probe the connections. Is all art at bottom an effort to explain, fend off or come to terms with death; to commemorate, or communicate with, the dead; or to defy death by making something that lives on? The works assembled here embody the ongoing preoccupation of artists with some of the irresolvable mysteries that stir them to make art.

Can art that seethes with intensity, opening up very dark corners of our common experience, somehow seem appealing? Anfter two years of fighting the disease, Willard passed away in 1967. Although Morgan never specifically mentioned her husband's illness as a factor in returning to photomontage, several of her artworks from this period seem to address the themese of cancer and death. Among these works is 'Confrontation.' The skull is a time-honored artistic symbol of death, but in this photomontage the skull suggests a secondary meaning. Morgan placed the skull and spine in opposition to the head and neck of the woman, to present two opposite states of existence: life and death. A likely refernce to the Asian concept of opposites, the Yin and Yang, appears as the primarily white upper half of the montage, the location of the skull, stands in opposition to the dark tones of the lower half, where Morgan placed the woman's head. The specific negatives Morgan chose are relevant as well. The dancer Anna Sokolow is the woman who appears in 'Confrontation.' Morgan utilized a 1940 photograph of the dancer performance 'Slaughter of the Innocents.'...In designing the montage, Morgan chose an image of a woman who looked remarkably similar to herself in her youth. Furthermore, Sokolow closes her eyes as if in a reverie. The ghostly, disembodied hand reaches toward her. It is a large, thick hand reminiscent of the the hand of Morgan's deceased husband. The specter of death, as represented by the skull, overalps Sokolow's head. The typical “death’s head,” a skull with flared wings, was intended to remind the living of the certainty of death; the verses carved on many stones served the same purpose. Most stonecutters, though clearly accomplished artists, did not sign their work. Although some of them can be identified through local archives, the names of many have been lost. Yet their work was deeply felt in a society where other forms of visual art were almost unknown. Historian Allen Ludwig writes: “…only in the burial ground could the average Puritan see an impressive quantity of visual art, hence the impact of the symbols must have been a good deal stronger then than now because the imagery itself was so much more uncommon.” (Allen Ludwig, Graven Images, p. 58).

Gauguin, Paul. It consists of an everyday continental flat iron of the sort that had to be heated on a stove, transformed here into a non-functional, disturbing object by the addition of a single row of fourteen nails. The transformation of an item of ordinary domestic life into a strange, unnameable object with sadistic connotations exemplified the power of the object within dada and surrealism to escape the rule of logic and the conventional identification of words and objects. Man Ray once said, "There are objects that need names."

In his autobiography Man Ray recounted the story of the making of the original Cadeau. On the day of the opening of his first solo exhibition in Paris he had a drink with the composer Erik Satie and on leaving the café saw a hardware store. There with Satie’s help – Man Ray spoke only poor French at this point – he bought the iron, some glue and some nails, and went to the gallery where he made the object on the spot. He intended his friends to draw lots for the work, called ‘Cadeau’, but the piece was stolen during the course of the afternoon.

Arturo Schwarz, Man Ray’s dealer and author of a monograph on him, has written of this piece:

"Gift is a typical product of Man Ray’s double-edged humour. Its sadistic implications need not be stressed. Its erotic aspect is revealed by Man Ray’s remark: ‘You can tear a dress to ribbons with it. I did it once, and asked a beautiful eighteen-year-old coloured girl to wear as it as she danced. Her body showed through as she moved around, it was like a bronze in movement. It was really beautiful.'

Man Ray’s intentions, which might be seen as merely to deride the iron’s functions are much more subtle. Man Ray never destroys, he always modifies and enriches. In this case, he provides the flatiron with a new role, a role that we dimly guess, and the probably accounts for the object’s strange fascination." (Schwarz, p.208)

Despite Man Ray’s status as one of the pioneering figures of interwar art, his objects are not particularly widely known. This is largely due to his greater fame as a photographer; but it is also in part due to the complex history of many of his objects. A number of the earliest works were lost or accidentally destroyed (the same is true of many of the early classic objects by his friend Marcel Duchamp). Others are known primarily as photographs reproduced in surrealist magazines and their status as objects has been obscured by the celebrity of the photographic images. In fact, Man Ray sometimes made objects in order to photograph them, and then discarded them, or reused them in other ways. He also remade some works, thereby creating new originals, and when, in the 1960s and 1970s, there was a greater commercial interest in the objects, he, like Duchamp, arranged for some of his objects to be produced in editions.

[Tattoo Flash] Peckham, George. It seems plausible to argue that love is the ultimate ‘killer and thriller’. Potentially exhilarating or devastating, love offers the possibility of both the highest highs and lowest lows: the thrills of butterflies in the stomach or the tragedies of heartbreak. The chief signifier of love is the heart. Hearts full of love miss a beat, throb, ache, and pulsate whether in bliss or in grief. ‘Palpitations’ reminds us of the uplifting and endearing aspects of love, as the display of hearts in fine antique saucers creates a precious and heart warming visual effect.

The hearts are have been issued in four groups of five variously colored examples: Red, the classical meaning of the heart – love; Blue connotes royal, blue blood; Purple, made with a type of glass which contains both lead and gold, reminisce the impossible alchemical quest of turning lead into gold; Green – this heart was fired with the intention of raising awareness about the recent threat posed to the Amazon Forest, so it is called the ‘Amazon Heart’.

[Beham, Barthel. In contrast to that painting and an associated drawing, the present work is in a much more upright rectangular format and is in reversed orientation, therefore similar to the Lievens etching of the subject published shortly thereafter. In addition, to the right and left of Jesus, figures can clearly be seen - probably only depicted in the drawing - which are completely missing in all other versions.

Lievens was a Dutch Golden Age painter who was associated with his close contemporary Rembrandt, a year older, in the early parts of their careers. They shared a birthplace in Leiden, training with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, where they shared a studio for about five years until 1631. Like Rembrandt he painted both portraits and history paintings.

The Gospel of John reports that Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary were close friends of Jesus. However, during Jesus' absence from Bethany, Lazarus died and had already been buried for four days when Jesus arrived at his friend's grave. The following event, captured in the image, is described in the Gospel of John as follows (John 11:41-44): "... Then they took away the stone [from the tomb]. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said [to God], "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me; But because of the crowd around me, I have said it, so that they may believe that you sent me." After he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" Then the deceased came out; his feet and hands were bound with bandages, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. ..."

Lievens depicts the biblical narrative in a most expressive way as a dramatic event full of mysticism and horror, transporting the viewer to a dark tomb with an open sarcophagus deep in the ground. Only dim light illuminates the scene. Jesus stands praying at the tomb with a halo and his gaze directed toward heaven, while a dark-skinned servant appears to be pulling an oversized white shroud from the tomb, from which two eerily raised hands toward Jesus, symbolizing Lazarus' resurrection. Behind the servant, two other figures are clearly recognizable. At the far left edge of the picture, the painter depicts an old Jew, incredulous. Astonished, with wide-open eyes, next to him, one of Lazarus's sisters, a professed disciple of Christ, appears lost in fervent prayer. All other figures in the composition remain vaguely indicated in the background. The artist effectively emphasizes the shroud, which dominates the painting, shining cold white against the general darkness. Lievens thus skillfully keeps the message "Memento Mori" before the viewer of the painting. He cleverly composes the depiction, with Jesus, Lazarus, and the shroud forming a triangle, symbolizing faith, death, and resurrection as the promise of Christian life. Lievens seems to have painted the present motif several times, including in reverse, around 1630—under the direct influence of Rembrandt in their shared workshop.

Writing for The New York Times in 2008, art critic Ken Johnson said the known Lievens painting was "An unusually austere composition, it has a simplicity and openness that enhance its mystery." He also stated that Rembrandt enjoyed the painting so much that he acquired it and hung it in his home. When Rembrandt fell on hard times later in his life, he sold Jan Lievens' version of The Raising of Lazarus.

Writing for Smithsonian magazine, Matthew Gurewitsch describes the painting as "a gothic scene in a somber palette and with the utmost restraint".
