Berlioz, Hector. (1803–1869). Autograph Letter of Recommendation for François Wartel.

Autograph letter signed. 1 page, no place, no date. Translated from the French in full: "I address to you Mr. Wartel an artist, who understands that which he sings; he will charm you with the works of Schubert, Beethoven, Weber, etc. Protect him, promote him, introduce him to Anderson; he could by way of him sing at the court. I would be in your debt. I wrote to you previously, you did not reply to me. What has become of you? A thousand regards, H. Berlioz."  Framed under glass. Framed to 13 x 17.5 inches (33 x 45 cm).

The French tenor Pierre-François Wartel (1806-1882) performed at the Paris Opera from 1831 to 1846 and was closely associated with Berlioz, creating the role of Francesco in his Benvenuto Celini (10 September 1838) and playing Ottokar in the Berlioz version of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz (7 June 1841). He also created roles in two operas by Donizetti -  Néarque in Les martyrs and Don Gaspar in La favorite.  Along with Nourrit he advanced the appreciation of Schubert's lieder in France by performing them frequently in his recitals, traveling also to Berlin, Prague, and Vienna. Wartel devoted himself mainly to teaching after 1842 and was thought among the best teachers of the time, his students including Christine Nilsson and Zelia Trebelli-Bettini, among others.
