Autograph musical quotation signed by the great American composer and conductor, dated February 10, 1976. 8.5 x 7.75 inches (21.5 x 19.5 cm); three bars on a system of two staves from the musical 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ("Take care of this house, Be always on Call. Care for..."), inscribed to Randall Hoey, "For my dear friend Randy / (The Magnificent) / Leonard Bernstein / 10 Feb '76" written in sepia ink on pale sepia paper. Age-toned with some fading to the ink, else fine. Nicely mated to 10.75 x 11.5 inches (27 x 29 cm). Lengthy quotations from Bernstein are rare.
The musical 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, with music by Bernstein and book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, was a colossal flop, premiering in May 1976, and closing after only seven performances. Most of the criticism, which told the story of the White House and commented on race relations, was leveled at Lerner's book. After Bernstein's death, a classical treatment of the music, entitled A White House Cantata, was released and is considered by many to be a forgotten Bernstein masterpiece.
