Jane Galante was a leader in San Francisco’s chamber music scene for more than 60 years as a pianist, scholar, board member, and vigorous advocate of music and education.  She toured Europe and America with Ferenc Molnar, then principal violist of the San Francisco Symphony, and cellist Zara Nelsova, and performed with the cellist Lazlo Varga and harpist Anne Adams, also of the S.F. symphony. Galante taught for several years at Mills College, where she had earlier been a devoted student of Darius Milhaud. This led her in 1988 to publish the translation from the French of Darius Milhaud by Paul Collaer (including the definitive catalogue of compilations); and Darius Milhaud Interviews With Claude Rostand. For this, she was decorated with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Artes et des Letters, by the government of France.

The French actress and librettist Madeleine married her cousin, Darius Milhaud, in 1925. Darius' piano suite La Muse Menagère (The Household Muse) is dedicated to her, and depicts their daily life together. She wrote the libretti for his operas Médée, Bolivar, and La Mère coupable. With their son Daniel, they fled France when the Germans were within range of Paris in May 1940, eventually landing in the US where Darius taught at Mills College and Madeleine taught American students about French and French theatre. They returned to France in 1946.
