Milhaud, Darius. (1892–1974). "Méditation," op. 277 - Autograph Musical Manuscript.
Autograph musical manuscript of the important French avant-garde composer's 1947 work for solo piano.  In black ink, fifty-five measures on eight systems across 2 pp. (recto/verso), Belwin Inc. Parchment brand manuscript paper, a few cancelations/alterations in the same ink, signed and dated at the conclusion "Mills 30 Avril  / Milhaud."  Two small tape repairs to the left edge, else fine. 27.5 x 34.5 cm.  From the collection of Jane Galante (1924 - 2010).

The work was commissioned by the composer and pianist Elsa Baraine (1910-1999), but the first performance was not until 27 April, 1980 by Jane Galante at the San Francisco Women Musician's Club. The Paul Collaer definitive works catalogue (edited by Jane Galante), p. 344, records the composition date and location as "Mills, 30 April 1947," suggesting that the present manuscript was completed on the date of the work's original composition.

Jane Galante was a leader in San Francisco’s chamber music scene for more than 60 years as a pianist, scholar, board member, and vigorous advocate of music and education.  She toured Europe and America with Ferenc Molnar, then principal violist of the San Francisco Symphony, and cellist Zara Nelsova, and performed with the cellist Lazlo Varga and harpist Anne Adams, also of the S.F. symphony. Galante taught for several years at Mills College, where she had earlier been a devoted student of Darius Milhaud. This led her in 1988 to publish the translation from the French of Darius Milhaud by Paul Collaer (including the definitive catalogue of compositions); and Darius Milhaud Interviews With Claude Rostand. For this, she was decorated with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Artes et des Letters, by the government of France.
