Adams, Ansel. (1902–1984) [Iwerks, David. (b. 1933)]. Three Original Portraits of Adams with Signed Typed Letter to the Photographer.

An intriguing and significant TLS from the famed American photographer best known for his monumental images of the western American landscape. TLS, on his Carmel, CA letterhead. September 29, 1964. To fellow photographer, David Iwerks, responding in detail to the portraits Iwerks had taken of him. In full:

"Good to hear from you and to receive the prints. They have an astonishing technical quality; you surely know how to work with lights. I am impressed how useful one of the prints would be for the Arthritic Foundation! My fingers look like Chinese Noodles- but that is not your fault! General opinion is that I look older than I am. I always have! I don't know what anyone can do about it. I am inclined to like the one that is more full-faced. But I honestly feel I would be better minus the hands-perhaps with some composition with the camera in which just the head shows. Don't think I intend to be un-appreciative! You did a very remarkable job with a very difficult subject! My wife joins me in warmest greetings to you both! Come and see us again, soon. Cordially, Ansel Adams / Do you want the prints returned? Or do you have dups?”

In fine condition. Together with two retained copies of Iwerks's letters to Adams and with three original 11 x 14 inch prints, each titled and signed on the verso by Iwerks: two variant prints of the same portrait, and one different image.

Provenance: The Estate of David Iwerks, Esteemed Portrait Photographer and Son to the Legendary Disney Animator Ub Iwerks, Los Angeles. A most intriguing connection between two important photographers of the American West.
