Menuhin, Yehudi. (1916–1999). Signed Photograph.
Signed Bender of NY portrait of the American-British violinist playing his instrument, inscribed to Paul McMahon, somewhat puzzlingly with two different dates (1967 and 1971). 10 x 8 inches (25.3 x 20.2 cm). In fine condition.
The collector for whom this was signed frequently met with stars and had them sign photographs for him in different years. Our best guess in this case is that the photograph, already signed in 1967, was mistakenly resubmitted to Menuhin along with a fresh batch, and he just added the later date in a joking way. We have encountered others from this collection where this sort of thing was more explicitly noted by the signer (such as "again in 1971").
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
