First edition of this beloved Margaret Wise Brown classic, with the child bear’s furry belly peeping through the publisher’s die-cut box. 16mo (83 x 50mm). Color illustrations by Garth Williams in publisher’s fur-covered boards and die-cut pictorial box. Usual page toning; shaken but tight binding with slightly loose hinges; light bowing and wear to boards and backstrip; small stain, light peeling, bowing, and wear to box.
Brown & Williams’ first collaboration, “Little Fur Family” follows a little fur child throughout the day and all the sights and sounds he encounters. This first edition is fully bound in rabbit fur but subsequent issues only had a patch of fur on the child’s body for the reader to pat. In its present first state it has a sort of surrealist, Meret Oppenheim appeal!
