Two extraordinary original designs, numbered #7 and #8, the second identified in pencil in the outer margin "The Rose of Algeria," though evidently from a somewhat later production as MacGeachy was not the original costume designer. Gouache on paper, mounted to bard with additional sketches and notations in pencil on board. Each signed "Cora MacGeachy" lower right. Approx. 14.5 x 9.6 inches. 

The Rose of Algeria opened on September 20, 1909 at the Herald Square Theatre and thought it had a very short first run, still remained popular with stock and amateur theatres and continued to receive a few productions into the 1950s. Herbert is reported to have held his score for The Rose of Algeria as one of his personal favorites. 

Cora MacGeachy was one of the premier costume designers of the first quarter of the 20th century. She was the sole costume designer for several dozen Broadway musicals and revues, including a number produced by Florenz Ziegfeld and George M. Cohan. She also designed costumes in collaboration with others for many more shows.
