[Spanish Dance] [McMahon, Paul] [GILES]. Painted Portrait of Dancer With Associated Ephemera, 1958.
An amusing painting somewhat in the style of late Picabia, with associated ephemera. The portrait, by an unidentified artist signing as "Giles, 1958" is of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications. McMahon began his career as a dancer and actor (he can be seen in a small role in the 1956 film Carousel, for example) and for a time toured in a dance duo performing a Spanish-inflected ballet. The present painting is sold together with the costume jacket and castanets depicted in the painting, as well as two photographs of him and his dance partner in this attire. Campy, fun. Framed painting measures 28 x 22 inches (71 x 56 cm).
