Le Charivari, published from 1832 to 1937, was widely known for printing caricatures, political cartoons and reviews. This launched him on a career of forty years as comic artist to the weekly press, during which he drew 3,958 lithographs before the onset of blindness in the 1870s put a stop to his work. The initial target of his attacks was the government of King Louis-Philippe, which he ridiculed with a corrosive wit that brought him to the notice of the press police and earned him a jail term of six months in 1832. He nevertheless continued to draw for La Caricature and for another of Philipon's journals, Le Charivari, developing, in the heat of weekly combat, a graphic style of unsurpassed brilliance in an art that in France had little prestige. When a tightening of censorship in 1835 put an end to La Caricature, Daumier shifted to politically unobjectionable social satire for Philipon's other journal, Le Charivari. In hundreds of lithographs, published serially, two or three a week, he turned a sharp eye on the characteristic look and demeanor of every segment of Parisian society, ranging from the crotchets and timidities of the urban middle class with which he fondly empathized (Les Bons Bourgeois), to the frauds of speculators (Robert Macaire), the pomposities of lawyers (Gens de justice), the self-delusions of artists, the rapacity of landlords, and the vanity of bluestockings. ' Beneath him is a group singing from a paper with lines of music, under which is written, '...world shall Bow to ye Assyrian Throne'; each of the groups has music with these words (or with 'the world...'); and if it were not for the date on the receipt, which proves that the print was issued before the oratorio appeared, one would conjecture that the words 'world shall Bow', etc., ironically underline the lack of success the oratorio enjoyed. On the morning of Wednesday 26 May 1784 at Westminster Abbey (where Handel is buried), 525 musicians and singers performed the Dettingen Te Deum, one of the Coronation Anthems, one of the Chandos Anthems, part of the Funeral Anthem, and a few shorter pieces. The next evening at the Pantheon a smaller group performed various songs and choruses, sacred and secular, four concertos, and an overture, and on the Saturday morning the full company returned to the Abbey to perform ‘Messiah’. Conceived originally to have been the score of a silent Charlie Chaplin film (Cinéma-fantaisie for violin and piano), it grew into a ballet with a scenario by Jean Cocteau, stage designs by Raoul Dufy, costumes by Guy-Pierre Fauconnet and a first performance which involved the famous Fratellini clowns from the Medrano circus. The premiere of the ballet was given in February 1920 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and subsequently gave its name to a celebrated Parisian cabaret-bar, Le Boeuf sur le Toit, which became a meeting-place for Cocteau and his associates. \"Although the history of Le Boeuf - both bar and ballet - is by now well known, the nightclub's emergence as a meeting ground for the haute monde and modernist artists merits further consideration here...The Ballet earned a coveted spot in the 'Gazette du Bon Ton,' where it was depicted in a pochoir illustration by Eduardo Benito in 1920.\" (Mary E.
