Impressive bronze bust, French, late 19th century, after the original marble portrait known as Homer Caetani (the bust was found in the walls of the Caetani Palace at Rome), a Roman copy (2nd century CE) of a Greek original, on display at the Louvre. The name of the great poet "HOMERE" incised to the lower base, no foundry marks located. A finely detailed casting with an attractive dark patina. 21 x 11 x 8.5 inches; 53.5 x 28 x 21.5 cm.
