[Americana]. Turned Ash Burl Treen Bowl, 19th century.
Turned wooden treen bowl with attractive early blue-green paint. America, 19th century, Northeastern, likely MA. Single incised collar ring on exterior. Cracks, one with evocative early make-do repairs, but nevertheless completely stable and solid. 40 cm diameter; 13 cm high.
"Treen" comes from an old English word for "from the tree," and refers to small utilitarian objects such as carved wooden spoons, bowls, snuffboxes, turned trenchers (plates), mortars, and the like. Burl treen refers specifically to treen made form the burl, a knotty outgrowth of a tree. Before North America was settled by Europeans, Native Americans had a centuries-old practice of using these burls for their bowls and ladles and were master wood workers.
