It was given 18 performances, regarded as respectable for a début work, although it did not obtain lasting popularity until after Bizet's death. Its great male friendship duet in Act 1, Au fond du temple saint, sung by Nadir and his rival in love Zurga, is one of the most famous in all opera. Front cover somewhat worn, with bumped corners. Some even browning on the interior pages, which remain clear throughout. The inscription is strongly written, with a large dark signature. He ruled during a turbulent time in Egyptian and Middle East history that was marked by the creation of the Arab League, the first Arab-Israeli conflict, and heated nationalist opposition to the British. Instead of being the shrewd political leader that Egypt needed, Farouk was a materialistic womanizer and corpulent spendthrift whose outrageous lifestyle eventually led to his downfall. Enamoured of the glamorous royal lifestyle, although he already had thousands of acres of land, dozens of palaces, and hundreds of cars, the youthful king often travelled to Europe for grand shopping sprees, earning the ire of many of his subjects. It is said that he ate 600 oysters a week and in 1951, he bought the pear-shaped 94-carat Star of the East Diamond and a fancy-coloured oval-cut diamond from jeweler Harry Winston. Overthrown in the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 , he was forced to abdicate in favor of his infant son Ahmed Fuad, who succeeded him as Fuad II of Egypt. A brilliant original sketch which is unmistakably the 'little black dress' Givenchy designed for actress Audrey Hepburn in the classic 1961 romantic comedy, the dress which has been voted the most iconic movie dress in the history of cinema. We could find no record of a signed Givenchy drawing of his most famous design having appeared on the market.

The French aristocrat and fashion designer founded The House of Givenchy in 1952 and is celebrated in particular for having designed much of the personal and professional wardrobe of Audrey Hepburn, as well as clothing for clients such as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. It defined an era. It helped to create the foundation for what it means to be a fashion icon. His work told the story of glamorous sophistication, female rebellion and the complexities of beauty and desire. He achieved this remarkable feat with a single little black satin dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the opening sequence of 1961’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” From the front, the dress was simple enough: sleek and sleeveless with a flattering bateau neckline. From the back, it was dynamic, sexy and utterly sophisticated with its geometric cutouts and the alluring way it framed the nape of the neck. That moment in that dress tells the audience a lot about Hepburn’s character, Holly Golightly. For one thing, it’s a cocktail dress — an evening dress — and there she is standing on the street peering into the store window with her breakfast. She has been out all night and she does not look wrecked. In fact, she looks splendid. The dress is not easy to wear. It follows the curves of the body. It reveals the arms. But it’s not a dress that constrains a woman. It requires effort but not sacrifice. The dress is special. It makes a woman want to slink about, controlled and teasing. It’s possible to envision it on all sorts of shapes — slim, like Hepburn, but also curvy. And it looks as perfect in 2018 as it did 50 years ago. Givenchy didn’t invent the little black dress, but he gave it its enduring cachet. He infused it with meaning beyond the practical and versatile. The dress represented a lifestyle: glamorous, reckless, defiant, urbane. It was Holly Golightly’s dress. She was complicated and sad, confounding and charming. She was not Everywoman. She was exceptional, which is what every woman wants to be. And her signature dress was wondrous." (Robin Givhan, "What Givenchy knew before the rest of us about the power of a little black dress," Washington Post, 3/12/18)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Givenchy_2C_Hubert_de_Little_Black_Dress_-_Audrey_Hepburn_16608a.jpg?v=1722189260
17452-flinck-govaert-1615-1660-van-dalen-cornelis-1638-ca-1664-portrait-of-a-black-woman-1653-64
[Flinck, Govaert. This G major concerto was the first to be conceived – he had had hopes of polishing up his rusty piano technique in order to play it himself – but before he could set to work on it seriously there came the commission from the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost an arm in the war and was anxious to have a concerto for the left hand only. The two works occupied Ravel for the whole of 1930 and most of 1931, the Concerto for Left Hand being finished first and performed in November 1931, the G major one played (in the end) by its dedicatee Marguerite Long with the Lamoureux Orchestra under the composer’s direction, on January 14, 1932, first in Paris, then on tour all over Europe. Ravel insisted it was written “very much in the same spirit as those of Mozart and Saint-Saëns. The music of a concerto, in my opinion, should be gay and brilliant, and not aim at profundity or dramatic effects.” He went on to admit that the work contained touches of jazz, “but not many”.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Ravel_MauriceConcertopourpianoetorchestre24080a.jpg?v=1744988540
erte-romain-de-tirtoff-1892-1990-designs-by-erte-fashion-drawings-illustrations-from-harper-s-bazar-signed
Erté [Romain de Tirtoff] (1892-1990) [Barthes, Roland. Her formative years, though financially secure, were rendered emotionally unstable due to family loss. She was an only child, born on 8th February 1911 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father, William T. Bishop (1872 - 1911), who had part-Canadian ancestry, belonged to a wealthy Massachusetts family of builders. Her mother, Gertrude Bishop née Boomer, was a Canadian from Nova Scotia whose family were considerably less prosperous than her husband’s. William Bishop, who suffered from Bright’s Disease, died in October 1911, aged thirty-nine, after a marriage which had lasted a mere three-and-a-half years, his daughter being then only eight months old. Her mother was institutionalized in 1916 with mental illness.

During her lifetime, poet Elizabeth Bishop was a respected yet somewhat obscure figure in the world of American literature. Since her death in 1979, however, her reputation has grown to the point that many critics, like Larry Rohter in the New York Times, have referred to her as "one of the most important American poets" of the 20th century. Bishop was a perfectionist who did not write prolifically, preferring instead to spend long periods of time polishing her work. Her status as one of the greatest American poets of the 20th century is based on the smallest of oeuvres. Some 70 poems were published in her lifetime in four very slim volumes. Her verse is marked by precise descriptions of the physical world and an air of poetic serenity, but her underlying themes include the struggle to find a sense of belonging, and the human experiences of grief and longing. She died in 1979, aware that her reputation was steadily increasing, eclipsing that of her close friend and fellow poet Robert Lowell. Since her death and the publication of two superb volumes of her correspondence, One Art and Words in Air(letters between her and Lowell) it has grown ever more secure. In the select pantheon of 20th-century poets writing in English, she is placed with TS Eliot, WB Yeats, Wallace Stevens and WH Auden. Her poems often took her years to write and complete, and their formal perfection and the simple, limpid accuracy of their language have always drawn the admiration of other poets. John Ashbery called her "the writer's writer's writer."

From the collection of the important American poet Frank Bidart, who received the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, the Griffin Poetry Prize Lifetime Recognition Award, and the 2017 National Book Award for Poetry for his book Half-light: Collected Poems 1965–2016. Frank Bidart was a student and collaborator of Robert Lowell, eventually becoming a close friend and amanuensis to the elder poet, later co-editing Lowell's Collected Poems. It was through Lowell that Bidart met Elizabeth Bishop, and "Lowell and Bishop became muses of a sort for Bidart...Lowell and Bishop were less teachers than parents of his own choosing, who encouraged him to become the artist he couldn’t be back home.
