The work is written for reciter (voice-type unspecified in the score, but traditionally performed by a soprano) who delivers the poems in the Sprechstimme style accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. Though the music is atonal, it does not employ Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, which he did not use until 1921. Among Schoenberg's most celebrated and frequently performed works, its instrumentation – flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano with standard doublings and in this case with the addition of a vocalist – is an important ensemble in 20th- and 21st-century classical music and is referred to as a Pierrot ensemble.

59-mozart-wolfgang-amadeus-die-zauberflote-oper-in-zwey-augzugen-vollstandiger-auszug-fur-s-pianorte-allein
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. Having seen Reinhardt's riveting production of Hofmannsthal's Elektra in the autumn of 1905 Strauss was convinced the play would make a compelling opera. Not entirely sure he should compose consecutive tragedies he nonetheless gave in to Hofmannsthal's pleading and vigorously began composing Elektra in the summer of 1906. As he had with Oscar Wilde's Salome he set the play to music which was finished in 1908 and given its première in 1909 as part of a Strauss opera festival in Dresden. Le Charivari, published from 1832 to 1937, was widely known for printing caricatures, political cartoons and reviews. After 1835, when the government banned political caricature, Le Charivari began publishing satires of everyday life.

In 1831, Daumier was engaged by Philipon to become a cartoonist for his newly founded journal of political satire, La Caricature. This launched him on a career of forty years as comic artist to the weekly press, during which he drew 3,958 lithographs before the onset of blindness in the 1870s put a stop to his work. The initial target of his attacks was the government of King Louis-Philippe, which he ridiculed with a corrosive wit that brought him to the notice of the press police and earned him a jail term of six months in 1832. He nevertheless continued to draw for La Caricature and for another of Philipon's journals, Le Charivari, developing, in the heat of weekly combat, a graphic style of unsurpassed brilliance in an art that in France had little prestige. When a tightening of censorship in 1835 put an end to La Caricature, Daumier shifted to politically unobjectionable social satire for Philipon's other journal, Le Charivari. In hundreds of lithographs, published serially, two or three a week, he turned a sharp eye on the characteristic look and demeanor of every segment of Parisian society, ranging from the crotchets and timidities of the urban middle class with which he fondly empathized (Les Bons Bourgeois), to the frauds of speculators (Robert Macaire), the pomposities of lawyers (Gens de justice), the self-delusions of artists, the rapacity of landlords, and the vanity of bluestockings. There are 3 pages of sketches by Dali for Wagner's "Bacchanale" and "Devil's Holiday," along with a great photo of the artist studying a figurine. A 4-page color insert printed on heavy stock features designs and costumes by Tchelitcheff, Dali (double-page spread) and Picasso; further photos show costumes for "Bacchanale" and Matisse working on a set. Lots and lots of photos of dancers, and a wonderful photo on the last page of 5 ballerinas backstage arranging their hair. Binding is tight, slight edgewear to back cover, creases to corners, small area of water damage to top edge. A remarkable production attesting to the company's determination to stay alive during the war.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/28Matisse_2C_Henri._29_Ballet_Russe_de_Monte_Carlo._C2_A0Souvenir_Program_712a_281_29.jpg?v=1722185986
744-mutter-anne-sophie-signed-photograph
Mutter, Anne Sophie. A work from 1931, Rébus, was originally intended to be a ballet with choreography by Leonid Massine. The work was never staged but had its debut in a concert version, with the composer conducting.

A rebus is the depiction of a syllable, a word, or a name through enigmatic images.In the original plan for the ballet, the audience was supposed to guess which proverb was being illustrated by the various scenes. They were to submit their answers at the end of the performance.

The titles for the scenes were:
Prélude au Rébus
Danse de Pauvreté
Gigue des Nez
Variations de Pas
Fugue des Vices
Parade

The final word of each scene, omitting the first and last is: Pauvreté, n’est pas vice (Poverty is no vice). Oddly enough, these scene titles were only in the individual parts, not the full score. We don’t know if the audience was told the puzzle or was even able to sort it out from the concert performance.

However, this work, the product of the 19-year-old Markevitch is remarkable for what it achieves as a concert work in and of itself. The six parts are all done at a quick tempo – there is, as one reviewer said, ‘no andante by way of contrast’ but rather through ‘giving each piece a different character and colour’. The critic for the New York Times in his review of the premiere noted in particular the Variations movement as being of ‘splendid originality. Long melodic phrases unfold themselves as in Mussorgsky, but above them swarms an agitated mass of rhythmic motives curiously interlaced in a subtle counterpoint.’ Through his review he compares Markevitch not only to Mussorgsky but also to Ravel and Stravinsky, starting with his mastery of composition at such a young age."

(Maureen Buja, INTERLUDE, "The Puzzle Dance: Igor Markevitch’s Rebus," January 14th, 2023)

[Schumann, Robert.
