Autograph musical quotation of the beloved barbershop standard "Sweet Adeline," penned by its composer Harry Armstrong on the cover of a souvenir brochure containing "Pathos—Laughs—Facts" about the song and its publication. To the left of his portrait on the cover, Armstrong has penned two measures of the famous song with an inscription, and dated February 6, 1950. The inside pages of the brochure feature explain the history of the song and its most famous performances and recordings; Armstrong has updated the list with a 1950 appearance. Amusing concert program for an 1889 concert of sacred music at the Baptist Meeting House in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, written throughout in a precious "ye olde English" style. The concert took place "on ye evening of Thursday, May 9, 1889 at earlie candle lighte, wh occurs by ye Olde Farmers' Almanack, and not ye new fangled time, at 7.45 of ye clocke... For a true and faithful chronicle of all ye events wh will then come to pass, see ye lyst wh is in ye middle of ye booke [etc., etc.]" 16 pp. Original green wrapper with some edge nicks; overall toning; otherwise in very good condition. 7.5 x 10 inches (19 x 26 cm).

Autograph musical quotation in the hand of the English composer and conductor, who has penned the first eight measures of his well-known setting of the Tennyson poem "Sweet and Low." Undated. Neatly penned over two systems on a trimmed leaf of manuscript paper. Overall toning; horizontal folding crease with a slight split; overall in very good condition. 6.5 x 4 inches (16.6 x 10.5 cm). Together with a clipping from the Strand Magazine with a short biography and engraved portraits of Barnby.

A touching typed letter signed from the most important orchestrator in Broadway history, arranger for Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and George Gershwin, and himself a notable composer. May 24, 1975. To a Mr. Burt Silverman, Bennett writes: "The answer to your question is that I recently looked over the first few pages of a book published 150 years ago, and it started out 'In these difficult, nay impossible times in which we live...' Which says to me that the era matters little, but such things as beauty, faith and friendship seem to be able to weather any storm. I hope." In very fine condition. 5.5 x 8.5 inches (14 x 21.6 cm).

"This is the Army" - Signed Souvenir Program

Original souvenir program from the World War II patriotic revue "This is the Army," signed on internal pages by numerous members of the all-military cast and by the composer, Irving Berlin. The colorful program features several spreads of halftone photographs of the cast and crew, a page about Berlin's World War I show "Yip Yip Yaphank," a page of photographs of the commanding officers of the U.S. Army, and a large spread featuring the names of all 300 enlisted performers. Berlin has signed below a small photograph on p. 2, showing him at work on the score with two officers. Fine and boldly penned AMQS from the American composer and conductor, two measures ("Ma-ri-a") on a single musical staff, from his West Side Story (1957). Penned in brown ink on an off-white sheet of musical manuscript paper, identified as "West Side Story" and signed at the bottom "Leonard Bernstein." Color facsimile, printed in red, of an autograph letter from Bernstein to the older "Maître," dated March 29, 1962. Writing after an interview with Monteux was published in the Washington Post in which he called Bernstein "the most all round talented musician today," Bernstein says he was "deeply touched" by his remarks. "...I had no idea you valued me so highly as a composer: this was a thrill to read. And you are so right about the lack of time: I have written literally nothing in five years, since West Side Story!! Alas..." Catulle Mendès seemed dismayed - We will telephone you on Wednesday to arrange to rehearse before our concert on Sunday. With our gratitude and our sincere admiration, Nadia Boulanger." Original "Triplex Portrait" photograph of the great composer, shown in three slightly different poses within an ornate border. This well-known portrait was taken by Berlin court photographer O. Brasch, ca. 1889; this printing was issued in 1897 and is embossed with the year at the lower right corner. The photographer's insignia are reproduced as part of the border design. Autograph musical quotation from the important American composer, penned on the cover of a brochure about his compositions. Below a half-tone photograph of himself, Carter has penned a short quotation of two measures from the cello part to the opening of his String Quartet no. 2, signed and inscribed, and dated February 10, 1971. The brochure, issued by BMI, provides a biography of the composer as well as a list of recordings. Additions to the list and a list of Carter's degrees, in an unidentified hand, have been made in red ink on the last 3 pp., somewhat faded.
