Signed Letter with Rare Photograph of Brahms in Austria

Typed letter signed by actor Lionel Barrymore to pianist Gustave Becker, incorrectly addressing him as "Professor Decker" and complimenting him on a recent performance as part of the radio program Life Begins at 80.  April 8, 1949.  Barrymore writes, in part, "Just a short note to express my great appreciation for your two splendid piano renditions last Sunday evening...As you may know, I am a music lover and since one of your selections was by Brahms, I thought you might enjoy having the enclosed snap of the Composer taken in 1844 [sic]."  Horizontal mailing fold, else in fine condition.  6 x 7.75 inches (15.2 x 19.7 cm.).  Together with a photocopy of a profile on Becker from the February 4, 1940 Sunday Journal-Herald entitled "Gustave L. An uncommon 1907 program from an entire London Hyde Park Hotel concert devoted to the works of the popular French composer and pianist. Chaminade herself played several solo works and joined with singers Alice Mandeville and Leon Rennay for the other works. Boldly signed and dated in pencil and sold together with a vintage postcard photograph. 17 x 23 cm. New York: Chapell. 1951. Scarce signed sheet music from the popular lyricist of this song from the 1951 musical, "Flahooley." In addition to his lyrics for this song, Yarburg is remembered as lyricist of “Over The Rainbow,” “Brother Can You Spare A Dime?,” and “Paper Moon.”  5pp.  Signed on the front cover in blue felt tip, "E. Nach dessen Tode hrsg. von Constanze, Wittwe von Nissen, früher Wittwe Mozart. Mit einem Vorworte vom Dr. Feuerstein in Pirna.  2 volumes in 1.  1 lithogr. Portrait (Nissen), 6 lithogr. folding sheets (12 music pp). 8vo. XLIV (including subscriber's list), 702 pp. Lacking the various portraits and facsimiles other than as noted present. In original decorative blue wrappers, heavily damaged and worn, spine barely holding together with many pages loose and split from blocks, Nissen portrait heavily foxed, significant tears with losses through first ten pages, a few other small tears, chips and stains later in the volume. Ownership inscriptions to inner front wrapper, one dated 1829.  A very troubled example, but nevertheless a quite rare copy of the first major biography of Mozart, written by Constanze Mozart's second husband, "even today as a source of valuable material of importance" (Wolffheim).  Nissen married Mozart's widow Constanze in 1809. Correspondence Related to a Speaking Engagement including Autograph Letter Signed

Grouping of ALS and two telegrams from the Italian composer to Professor Irma Antonetto of the Associazione Culturale Italiana, regarding a speaking engagement in the first half of 1954.  ALS dated 8 October, 1953, wherein he proposes titling his lecture "The Orchestra: Secrets and enchantments, illusions and deceptions."  Rome; 1 pp.  Mailing folds, two holes to left margin, else in fine condition.  8.25 x 11.75 inches (21 x 29.8 cm.).  Several months later in a telegram dated 27 February 1954, he asks [Translated from the Italian] "Please call me in the morning."  In the second telegram dated 1 March he informs the professor "My wife's state of health has deteriorated such that I couldn't possibly leave her alone, so I must cancel my speaking engagement STOP Please understand STOP Cordially Ildebrando Pizzetti."  Recipient's name to verso of second telegram.  Expected surface creases, two holes to left margin, else in fine condition.  Approx. 7.25 x 6 inches (18.4 x 15.2 cm.). Amusing ALS from the Academy Award-winning composer to an unidentified "dear friend," concerning developments in the personal life of the composer Zoltán Kodály.  May 14, 1960;  1 pp. on personal stationary, translated from the Hungarian, German, and Italian in full.  "My dear friend / Thank you for sending me the 23-year-old interview, which I hadn't seen before and which of course interested me.  Well, Kodály, after a wife about 100 years old, has taken a 20-year-old as a wife.  'There is no fool like an old fool.'  Party gossip has it that she is expecting.  If it isn't true...  They are probably very glad that Fink is back from Europe. / With many kind regards to all, / Rósza Miklós."  ALS from Rózsa are uncommon.  Mailing folds, else fine.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).  Together with typed English translation.
