Ca. 1861 Skull and Crossbones "Confederated 'DEAD HEAD'" Envelope Cover

New York: D. Murphy’s Son . Graphically striking ca.1861 Anti-Confederate States Civil War illustrated patriotic envelope/cover with a fantastic, skull and crossbones cache. Measuring 5 1/2" x 3 1/8" and  titled “A Confederate ‘DEAD HEAD’”, it features a human skull above crossed bones, the skull wearing the hat of a court jester and donkey ears, text on the crossed bones reading “20 Dollars a Head” and “Dead or Alive” and featuring a bullet hole in the forehead of the skull and the initials “JD” (for Jefferson Davis) on the donkey ears. The full envelope, including both front and back panels and the original flap closure, in very fine condition.

Hand-colored lithograph by Currier depicting the death scene of President Harrison on April 4, 1841. His niece cries into her handkerchief as his nephew looks concerned towards his uncle. Other members of the cabinet mourn the loss of their leader. At the bottom of the lithograph it reads the last wishes of the President, "I wish you to understand the true principals of the Government. I wish them carried out. I ask nothing more." "Kennedy is the Remedy" - Abbie Hoffman's 1960 DNC Delegate Vest

Original cotton promotional vest from the 1960 Democratic National Convention, printed with red and blue stripes and the motto "Kennedy is the Remedy," and from the collection of political activist and anarchist Abbie Hoffman. The vest creates the look of an old-fashioned waistcoat with buttons and a pocket chain, and ties behind the back with cotton tapes. Lightly faded, but overall in fine condition. 16 x 23 inches. Together with a typed letter signed from Jerome Lieberman, a relative of Hoffman by marriage, explaining the provenance of the item. Read More...

Collection of Materials Related to the Assassination of President Kennedy

Grouping of six publications dating from 1963 and 1964 covering the assassination of the 35th President of the United States, including five magazines, three of which are oversized, together with reprintings of New York Times coverage.  Two issues of Life Magazine, one dated to November 29, 1963 with President Kennedy's portrait on the cover and the traditionally red Life logo rendered in a mournful black, and the other to December 6, 1963 with Mrs. Kennedy, Caroline, and John Jr. waiting to join the funeral procession to the Capital.  Third oversized publication a "permanent keepsake" from the publisher and editors of Look Magazine prepared in cooperation with the Kennedys, titled "JFK Memorial Book," opening with a letter to the reader from Jacqueline Kennedy and including numerous intimate full-color photographs of her with her children on the beach.  "365 Days Later... In Memoriam," published by Matador Magazine in 1964,  including numerous color images.  "John F. Kennedy Memorial Album" published 1964 by Macfadden-Bartell Corp. includes several essays and articles alongside photographs.  Assassination of a President: A chronicle of the six days from November 23 to November 28, 1963 reprinted from the pages of The New York Times, published by The Viking Press, 1963, includes two facsimile newspapers, one reproducing coverage from November 23–24, the other from November 25–28.  Facsimiles come in a grey folder with the president's profile on the front.  Magazines show minor wear along edges, occasional small tear, large tear to upper left of back cover to "John F. Kennedy Memorial Album," else fine.  Folder worn along edges, split along seams, tear to front, else good, facsimile newspapers in fine condition.  Magazines 8.5 x 11 inches (21.6 x 27.9 cm.), oversized publications 10.5 x 13.5 (26.7 x 34.3), newspapers 15 x 22.5 (38.1 x 57.1), envelope 9.5 x 13 (24.1 x 33).

FDR inscribes the photograph in the lower margin to the great violinist Jascha Heifetz at bottom blank margin: "For Jascha Heifetz with my regards/ Franklin D. Roosevelt."  With copyright of Harris & Ewing in lower left corner. The photograph is framed to the overall size of 12.75 x 11.5 inches (32.4 x 29.2 cm.); a small plaque on the frame reads, "This wood was part of the White House roof erected about 1817 and removed in 1927." Intriguing original photograph relating to the President's 56th Birthday Ball Celebration, held January 30, 1938, two days after the inscription dated at the foot.  The image depicts Hollywood stars Ray Bolger, Vera Zorina and Eleanor Powell (shown on the lap of Melvin C. Hazen (1869 - 1941), President of the District of Columbia Board of Commissioners) and James P. Sullivan, a close associate of FDR and an original member of the FDR "Cuff Link Gang," all of whom have inscribed to one Richmond Reich, who evidently worked with Hazen and the assembled stars on the Birthday Ball and who is almost surely the third male figure depicted in the image.  Mounted to backing board, water stain to right side which does not affect image, Hazen and Sullivan inscriptions exhibiting some light bleeding as a result, else fine.  14 x 11 inches (35.6 x 27.9 cm.).
