A highly interesting and significant collection of letters, photographs and documents concerning the history of recordings in France, documenting the history of the Académie du Disque Français founded in Paris in 1951 by Colette, Maurice Yvain, Jean Fayard, and the poet Guy-Charles Cros, son of the inventor of the phonograph. Ninety items in all, various sizes, Paris and elsewhere, c.1878-1983. Its founding president was Arthur Honegger and it included among its ranks other composers, men of letters, such as Cocteau, critics and discophiles. Einstein, a gifted amateur violinist had been a member of the Académie du Disque from September 1954 until his death in April 1955. "This present Saturday...will be performed...the Serious Opera of 'Artaxerxes'" - Original 1813 Broadside

Original broadside for a Saturday, October 16, 1831 performance at Theatre Royal, Covent Garden of the composer's opera, performed for the "8th time" and "[c]ompressed into two acts."  Broadside also advertises performances of "the Burlesque Tragick Opera" Bombastes Furioso and the "Farce (with Songs)" Love, Law and Physick." Creases and rough edges, but overall in fine condition for its age. Approximately 8.25 x 12.25 inches (21.3 x 42.5 cm).

Signed original Hastings-Willinger of Ohio photograph of the French composer and conductor shown in rehearsal, inscribed and signed "To Mr. Larry Davis / with my very best wishes / P. Boulez / April 69."  Trimmed down along upper edge from 8 x 10, else fine.  8 x 9.5 inches (20.32 x 24.1 cm.).

Larry Davis was the auditorium manager at Indiana University, where he had the opportunity to meet, and collect autographs from, numerous great performers.

Large print, ca. 1920, after Willy von Beckerath's color portrait of the great composer. Printed in brown, gray and black tones, light toning and edge wear; overall very good. "Printed USA" in upper right corner. 20 x 25 inches (51 x 63.5 cm).


The artist was the son of pianist Laura von Beckerath and vintner Rudolf von Beckerath, who were friends of the composer. In addition to the present portrait, Willy von Beckerath made numerous other portraits of Brahms, all from life.

Original single sheet program signed by conductor Walter Burle-Marx, soprano and featured soloist Bidu Sayão, and pianists Bernardo Segall and Noemi Bittencourt, from a performance by the New York Philharmonic as part of the World's Fair Music Festival on Thursday, May 4, 1939.  The performance, presented by the Commissioner General of Brazil, highlighted Brazilian soloists and composers, including works by Gomes, Mignone, Marx, Villa-Lobos, and Fernandez, along with vocal music by Gluck, Lully, and Adam.  Light creasing, else in fine condition.  1 p.  7 x 10 inches (17.8 x 25.4 cm.).

"'The Lord of the Manor' with some few Alteration to introduce New Songs by Bishop" - Original 1813 Broadside

Original broadside for a Thursday, March 11, 1813 performance at Theatre Royal, Covent Garden of John Burgoyne's opera The Lord of the Manor, presented "with... [a]lteration" to include new songs from Bishop and several other composers.  Also in this remarkable performance would be "a New Farce, with Musick" entitled At Home, featuring among other enticements "In act I. a SHAWL DANCE by Miss S. Booth." At the bottom of the program are a series of advertisements for future performances, including "the First Part" of Haydn's The Creation.  The bottommost entry would like "those numerous Parties who have been disappointed of Boxes for the New Farce of At Home, the Burletta of Midas, & the Farce of Love, Law & Physick" to know "that those pieces will be repeated together on Monday next."  Creases and rough edges, fine tears in middle that do not obscure the text, but overall in fine condition for its age.
