3. Babbitt, Milton. (1916–2011).
Autograph Letter Signed

Autograph letter signed from the important American composer to cellist Douglas Moore, suggesting that he collaborate with the composer Robert Pollock. 2 pp., n.d., on Princeton University Music Department letterhead, with envelope postmarked December 28, 1981. Babbitt writes: "Dear Douglas: Please try to forgive my unforgivable delay in responding to your interesting letter, but the opportunity for a composer which you proposed also involves a responsibility, on my and—eventually—his part which is not easily estimated except on the basis of a track record which most younger composers have not yet established. After considerable thought and concern, I have come up with the name of Robert Pollock, who is perhaps a bit older and better 'established' than the type of composer you had in mind, but he is a composer (and performer, incidentally, or not so incidentally in this respect) of such maturity and responsibility that he will understand if you deal with the matter circumspectly, and I would want you to acquaint yourself with his other music before, in any sense, committing yourself. [...] I am, as ever, Milton." Very fine. 5.5 x 8.5 inches (14 x 21.7 cm).

15. Copland, Aaron. (1900–1990) [Diamond, David. (1915–2005)].
Typed Letter Signed to David Diamond

Typed letter signed from the important American composer to fellow composer David Diamond. June 18, 1974; 1 p. Copland writes: "Dear David, Sorry to have held on to the libretto so long. It seems like a 'monster' job to put all those words to music. I will not attempt to judge the play itself, knowing so well what music does to mere words. I rather regret that so much use was made of the rhyme sequence. In the reading, I found it a disturbing detail—mostly because it calls attention to itself. At any rate, the task is formidable, and I certainly wish you luck with it! All best, Aaron. P.S. Am returning the libretto under separate cover." Toning around edges; some small edge tears; overall very good. 5.75 x 7.75 inches (14.8 x 19.7 cm). Read More...

17. Diamond, David. (1915–2005).
Early Autograph Letter Signed

Early autograph letter signed from the American composer to a close friend, dating from Diamond's first summer in Paris in 1936, sharing news and gossip and asking his friend for help collecting his mail and setting up his apartment. August 31, 1936. Diamond writes: "Dearest [...], Tomorrow at 10 in the morning I see Despian for the last time, and I shall bring back [...] information for you. Celia may come along, but since his letter asked me to come to his atelier, I had better go alone, I think. Also, these last 4 days are spent in preparation for leaving & I am going frantic trying to figure out how to send my bust and my records, for I've only 200 francs left, in other words, when I see you at the pier, I shall have 50¢ for the taxi man & tips. But I think Ross is going to support me during September. So I hope. If not I'll have to call Whiteman to get the checks going in circulation. Had dinner with Cora & Mrs. Albsberg last night & we dished dirt up to the Eiffelt Tower—& Henry was torn limb from limb—the result is that Mikey is now the high hope of the Schubart ménage. [...] Well my darling, in 12 days I shall be seeing you again.—I may go to Rochester for a week. Will you come too? And will you help me fix up my bed as yours is? I want my apartment to be [...] this year for I've so much to put in it—your head of me amongst my other things, photos, dessins [...] Love until the 12th, David."
