1. Alfano, Franco. (1875-1954).
Signed Photograph

A rare signed photograph of the Italian composer and pianist. Today, Alfano is best known for completing Puccini's unfinished opera "Turandot"in 1926, but he had considerable success with his own works during his lifetime. His "Cyrano de Bergerac" was revived not long ago at the Metropolitan Opera with Placido Domingo in the title role.

2. Alfano, Franco. (1875-1954).
Two Original Concert Programs

Two original programs from 1921 and 1922 from performances directed by the Italian composer and pianist.  Both from the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, where Alfano organized concerts for the Youth Orchestra from the local Liceo Musicale.  The performances included not only standard works, but also new works by composition students of Alfano.  Most of the performances were conducted by alumni of the school, though Alfano is billed as the Director. Both in fine condition.  Each 6.6 x 9.75 inches (17 x 24.7 cm.).

A large original mezzotint portrait of the English composer, the most significant figure in 18th-century English theatre music. A head and shoulders portrait in oval form, engraved by W. Le Centenaire d'Auber. Cantate par Leo Delibes.

Interesting program to the celebratory Cantata performance in honor of the Auber centenary celebration at the Opera, January 29, 1882. The work includes motifs from many of Auber's works, synthesized by Delibes into a celebratory cantata, with words sung by a "Choeur des Genies," and "La Muse." 4 pp. 24 X 31.5 cm.

8. Babbitt, Milton. (b. 1916).

An interesting signed 8 x 10 inch photograph of the American composer and musical innovator, shown here in front of one of the early synthesizers whose musical applications he pioneered. "The operator sits before a keyboard, not unlike a typewriter, and conveys to the machine his instructions in the form of holes punched on a paper roll fifteen inches wide. These holes represent binary decimal code numbers which determine the resultant pitch class, octave, envelope (growth and decay characteristics), spectrum (broadly speaking: timbre), and intensity of the musical event." (Babbitt, "Electronic Music," in "The Collected Essays," p. 73) Small tear to right margin, otherwise in fine condition.

19. Beach, Amy. (1867 - 1944).

An unusual AMQS from the most prominent female composer of her time, one of the first women composers to write in the larger forms and to receive genuine recognition abroad, and the first prominent American woman musician to receive all her training in the United States. Nice AMQS on a large sheet (17 X 20.5 cm), four boldly penned bars of music ("From Concerto in C# minor Op. 45"), inscribed "Mrs. H.H.A. Beach - Boston, June 6th 1899." Some minor toning, overall fine.
