A short autograph letter from the French Romantic composer, addressed to the French journalist, music critic and music publisher Léon Escudier and thanking him for a "superb and warm" article about his works. Translated from the French, in full: "My dear Escudier (I believe it was Leon who was the author), I came to shake your hand and thank you for the superb and warm article. There has rarely been written on my compositions something which is so remarkable in its insights, and which has made me so happy. Yours, H. Berlioz." 1 p., with an additional cover page addressed to Escudier. No place, no date. Born in Russia, the Surrealist and Neo-Romantic artist Eugene Berman is known for his imaginary landscapes and architectural conceits and is also recognized for his Baroque-like stage set designs for the likes of the Metropolitan Opera.

Original Photograph at Gershwin Jubilee with Paul Whiteman and Walter Damrosch

Remarkable original 1945 photograph of the very young conductor, arm and arm with two other conductors.   According to the press notice affixed to the verso, they were among those who turned out for the beginning of the Gershwin Jubilee Week at the Hotel Astor.  In fine condition, with a few stray marks.  10 x 8 inches (25.4 x 20.3 cm.).

Opening of the Philharmonic Hall with Jackie Kennedy - Original 1962 Photograph

Original press photograph of the American conductor and composer onstage at the 1962 opening of New York's Philharmonic Hall, later Avery Fisher Hall.  First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Secretary of State Dean Rusk are visible giving a standing ovation in the balcony, as Bernstein accepts the audience's applause.  The concert was televised as "Opening Night at Lincoln Center." Dated September 23, 1962.  Right edge rough; slight scratches to the image; otherwise in fine condition.  21 x 19 cm.

Signed card from the Italian violinist, teacher, music editor, and member of the Flonzaley String Quartet, dated New York, March 1932, and mounted to paper with a half-tone photograph clipped from an unknown publication, along with a clip of paper in Betti's hand that reads "Adolfo Betti, Hotel Ansonia, New York City," likely clipped from the envelope in which Betti returned the card once signed.  Fine.  Paper measures 6.75 x 6 inches (17.1 x 15.2 cm.), card 3.25 x 2.25 inch (8.2 x 5.7 cm.).

Hand-colored photograph postcard of the Italian soprano in Act 3 of Norma, holding a tiny silver dagger. Bianchini-Cappelli has signed boldly across the image and dated: Rimini, December 18, 1906. On the verso, the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Otaño. Some cracks to the surface and wear to the corners; overall in very good condition with vibrant colors and a clear signature. 3.5 x 5.5 inches (8.7 x 13.6 cm).

13590. [Big Bands].
USO Tour Signed Silk Hankies

An intriguing bit of big band ephemera, two silk Japanese handkerchiefs signed by a number of 1940s big band leaders/musicians.  Obtained by an American soldier at a USO show in Japan during the Korean War, the two handkerchiefs are sewn together at one corner with a few threads (easily separated), and are each signed by different artists. Each measuring 11''x 11'', each featuring an illustration of a Geisha with the words ''Ginza Tokyo'' (entertainment district in Tokyo).   The first handkerchief signed by: Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Sammy Kaye, Tommy Tucker and Ray Mckinley.  The second signed by Gene Krupa, Charlie Spivak, Paul Fredericks (inscribing to the soldier's wife Ruth), Guy Lombardo and Kenny Gardner.  Some creases, a few light stains, else fine.

Sold at their Bookstore, No. 45, Newbury Street; by said Thomas in Worcester; and by the Booksellers in Boston, and elsewhere. 1794. First edition. Letterpress pages. Pp. [i - iv], v-xxxiv, [35]-199, [1] p., [1] leaf of plates [ "Index"], final blank. Original blue paper over boards, sheep spine. Wanting the engraved frontispiece, which it was evidently bound without, indicated by foxing and offset patterns. Other copies are similarly deprived (eg LOC, a copy at Clements), but we have supplied an expert facsimile of his famous circular composition "Connection," printed on early and agreeably toned laid paper. Paper chipped from front board, otherwise a fine and exceptionally clean copy - dare we say, this is almost certainly the crispest condition Billings you are ever likely to encounter. Original outline of the Turkish pianist's right hand, traced in blue ink, boldly signed and dated May 11, 1958 on an album leaf titled "Forget-Me-Not." A very early signature from Biret, who signed at age 16 on the occasion of her first performance in Berlin. Note at the head reads (translated from the German): "The first appearance in Berlin in honor of the Turkish President Celal Boyar." Left edge rough and some light toning; overall in fine condition. 7.5 x 10 inches (19 x 25.7 cm).
