Signed photograph of the skillful if straightforward German conductor who had the misfortune to operate in the shadow of better-known Teutonic maestri of his generation such as Furtwängler, Klemperer, and Knappertsbusch. A member of the Nazi party, he was artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra during Furtwängler's tenure as chief conductor, and testified on his behalf at Furtwängler's denazification proceedings. 14.5 x 10.5 cm. Autograph signature of the English-born pianist and composer of Italian parentage, who studied with Moscheles, was a close friend of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins and who is mostly remembered as the untiring honorary secretary of the Philharmonic Society for twenty seven years, where he oversaw the introduction of many new works including by Elgar and Mackenzie and on several occasions brought Tchaikovsky over to conduct his own works. "Francesco Berger / aged 98" on a small card dated July, 1932, 8 x 5.5 cm, tipped to a larger page inscribed in another hand "With compliments" and baring his London address. A rare signature.

An interesting series of original Atlantic Press of Paris photographs of the original 1954 Paris production of "Jeanne au bucher." Each 18.5 x 24 cm and all in very fine condition. The collection includes three images of Bergman in the title role, one of which she has boldly signed in blue ink. The fourth image shows her in costume during the rehearsal period, seated together with the director Roberto Rossellini, the composer Arthur Honegger, and the writer Paul Claudel. Read More...
