8664. [Beatles].
Original Photograph with Maharishi Mahesh

Original vintage Keystone Press photograph, dated 8-8-1967 on the verso and with affixed press stub reading: "Three Of The Beatles Attend Lecture By Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who is in London for a farewell visit on his eighth and final world tour, after which he is retiring from public life, last night spoke on the essential role of transcendental meditation in modern life at a public lecture at the Hilton Hotel in London. Among those listening to him were three of the Beatles, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison. Maharishi lived as a recluse for many years in the Himalayas, but became concerned by the increasing tensions, suffering and strife in the modern world, that he left his seclusion to come out and teach the technique of transcendental meditation."  8.25 x 6.25 inches. Very fine.

Enormous original ink and watercolor portrait of Ringo by Heinz Edelmann, 31 x 47 inches, showing him in a Yellow Submarine-esque striped suit jacket against a psychedelic background. Framed and in very good condition, with scattered staining and soiling. Edelmann, a German illustrator and designer, is best known for his art direction and character designs for the Beatles' 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine. This work is unsigned and was presumably intended for some sort of display, possibly a performance set or event promotion. It may have been a preliminary draft for one of those things  - we have puzzled over the name spelling and frankly don't know what to make it of it. We acquired this from a French collector, who likewise didn't know what to make of that feature. But the piece is certainly contemporary to the period and based on the confidence and style of the line and overall impression, we feel confident in ascribing this to Edelman himself. However, as the work is unsigned, we must allow for the possibility it may have been executed by another hand, possibly an assistant or imitator. In any event, impressive in size and style, this is an extraordinary Beatles piece.

12533. [Beatles] Starr, Ringo. (b. 1940) [MARTIN SHARP (1942-2013)].
Live Give Love - 1967 POSTER FROM THE COLLECTION OF RINGO STARR

London: Big O Posters Ltd. [1968]. 30 x 20 inches, 76 x 50 3/4 cm. Striking metallic poster printed on foil, the design by Martin Sharp, a psychedelic adaptation of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel fresco The Creation of Man (1511-12). High art meets high art in this glistening piece of Sixties psychedelia, a companion piece to Sharp's more famous Wheels of Fire album cover of the same date for English rock band Cream. The two works, as printed in black ink on silver foil-coated card, present Christian and Eastern religious icons in a manner accessible to a Sixties audience familiar with the effects of hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD and marijuana. The text of Live Give Love reflects the dominant themes of peace and love which were at the heart of the counterculture and hippie movement between 1966-8, reaching their peak in the United States and United Kingdom during 1967's Summer of Love. The present example of the famous poster is from the collection of former Beatle, Ringo Starr. Some light creases to the edges, difficult to image given the relective nature of the foil, but in overall fine condition.

Illustrations for the poem Lenore by Gottfried August Burger (1747-1794) - Three Original Engravings

Group of three original stipple engravings after drawings by Lardy Diana Beauclerk, showing a man and woman on horseback being pursued by Death. In the first image, the man and woman look back as cloaked ghouls fly behind them; in the second, the man points ahead at a monk and a group of pallbearers. In the final image, the man has been replaced by a skeleton wielding a spear, and the woman swoons lifelessly on the horse behind him. Engraved by A. Birrell (first image) and Harding (last image) and all published June 1, 1796 by E. & S. Harding, Pall Mall. Each engraving ca. 11.75 x 9.25 inches (29.7 x 23.2 cm), clipped and mounted on card, slightly irregularly trimmed. Some toning and foxing, especially to the mounts; one corner rip has been repaired. Overall very good.
