Autograph Musical Quotation

Uncommon autograph musical quotation on a small album leaf from the Spanish virtuoso pianist, composer, and piano pedagogue, who has penned a short theme with the words "L'Ambassadeur de France" and noted in Spanish: "With admiration and apologies to dear Manén" [presumably Juan Manén (1883–1971), the Spanish violinist and composer who was particularly successful in Germany for his operas and orchestral works]. On the verso of the leaf, another hand has inscribed: "In remembrance of a charming acquaintance—"Teddy Jonás" and his mother Elsa von Grave / Berlin, May 1906." Toning; overall fine. 7.25 x 4.5 inches (18.3 x 11.3 cm).

Signed postcard photograph of the Czech violinist, composer and teacher, who is shown playing and has signed at the upper right, dating September 28, 1913, adding an inscription at the foot in Czech. From the collection of Harry Idle, a fellow student of Ottakar Sevcik. Corner creases and edge wear; somewhat poor contrast to the inscription (best seen at an angle), but signature fine and overall very good. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (13.9 x 9 cm).

Signed program from the important Soviet violinist's American debut, on November 20, 1955 at Carnegie Hall. He has signed over the first page of the program listing, which included Beethoven's Sonata op. 12, no.1, Prokofiev's Sonata no. 1, and works by Tartini, Ysaÿe, and Khachaturian. Concert program from a March 26, 1955 recital of violist William Primrose and pianist Rudolf Firkusny at Hunter College of New York, signed over the program listing by both performers. The concert included sonatas by C. P. E. Bach, Hindemith, Milhaud, and Brahms. 3 pp., with letter from the president of Hunter College on the cover and another concert program on the facing page; together with a small newspaper clipping about the concert and two promotional flyers about Primrose and Firkusny. Signed single-sheet program from the American virtuoso violinist who died tragically young. He performed as part of the Artists' Recitals series in New York on April 19, 1958, in a program which included Beethoven, Franck, Kreisler, Paganini, Saint-Saens, and Ravel. Large Signed Portrait

Oversized signed portrait of the great Hungarian violinist, court violinist of Queen Victoria and the early sonata partner of Johannes Brahms, whom he is credited with "discovering" in a Vienna cafe. Remenyi is shown in a three-quarter-length portrait engraving by Hungarian artist Miklós Barabás, standing with his hat in his hand. His signature is reproduced below. At the foot of the sheet, he has boldly signed and inscribed in Hungarian, dating November 26, 1864. Printed by Reiffenstein and Rösch, Vienna. Original cabinet photograph of the great Hungarian violinist, court violinist of Queen Victoria and the early sonata partner of Johannes Brahms, whom he is credited with "discovering" in a Vienna cafe. Remenyi is shown leaning on an ornate mantelpiece, holding his instrument and bow. Card stamped at the foot by photographer H. Rocher of Chicago. Some light toning and pencil notes on the verso; overall very fine. 4.25 x 6.5 inches (10.6 x 16.3 cm), tipped to a window mount (could easily be removed.)

Original concert program from the great Russian pianist, signed below his portrait photograph on the title page. He is shown at the keyboard in a dramatically silhouetted image, and has signed over a decorative staff and treble clef. The program, dated April 2, 1963, comes from a performance of Bach, Beethoven and Schubert in Bern, Switzerland on April 2, 1963. Mounting remnant to the last page; overall fine. 9 x 8 inches (22.6 x 20 cm).

Signed postcard photograph of the important Polish pianist, who is shown in a portrait by Gerschel of Paris and has signed at the right edge. Light silvering to the edges; overall fine. 3.25 x 5.25 inches (8.5 x 13.7 cm).

Moriz Rosenthal studied with Liszt for 9 years and was one of the most important pianists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A regular sonata partner of Fritz Kreisler, he toured frequently and left many recordings.

An amusing signed statement with a short autograph musical quotation from the great violin virtuoso. He has penned (translated from the French): "For the album / The violin is like the cicada because to make it sing, you must rub its belly." He adds a short musical quotation of two measures, and signs at the foot. Small tear to the right edge, folding crease; overall very good. 5.25 x 8.25 inches (13 x 20 cm).

Signed program from the celebrated violinist and cellist, who performed with the New York Philharmonic and Leonard Bernstein at Carnegie Hall on December 3–6, 1959. Stern and Rose have both signed over the second page of the program listing, which included Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no. 5, Berg's Violin Concerto, and Brahms' Double Concerto.
