Lepizig, 8 May, 1842. Addressed to Adolf Falk (apparently a close friend of David), with the original postmarked envelope. Writing on the last day of the famous disaster, David asks urgently for news of his mother and for Falk to arrange for her and his two sisters, Luise and Therese, to come to him in Leipzig, promising to cover any costs. A very interesting collection of signed photographs and autographs from French musicians of the early twentieth century, from the collection of violinist Marcel Chailley, his wife, pianist Céliny Chailley-Richez, and their son Jacques Chailley. Marcel and Céliny Chailley were known for the summer masterclasses they gave at their home in Seignelay and were associated with many prominent Parisian musicians; their son Jacques became an important musicologist and composer. Lenars is shown playing her chromatic (Pleyel) harp, a cross-strung instrument without pedals which was manufactured between 1894 and 1930. Signed program from the brilliant violinist, who performed for the Fresno Musical Club on April 13, 1950. The program included Mozart's Sonata no 8, Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, and as noted in pencil at the foot, three encores. 4 pp. Together with an autograph letter from the fan who obtained the signature (April 14, 1950; 2 pp.), reporting on the concert and on her meeting with Heifetz: "Last night's violin recital was the real treat for me... I have never heard Heifetz play so brilliantly at any time...When we obtained his autograph we were privileged to see the new Mrs. Heifetz, but I am always depressed with these sort of people when I come in such close contact with them." Also included is a further program from the Fresno State College Concert Band's performance one day earlier, which is also described in the letter. Folding creases; overall fine.
