Birmingham: Knott and Lloyd. [1802]. Original playbill for a July 29, 1802 performance of Thomas Linley's opera The Duenna, starring the English singer and actress Elizabeth Billington. At the Birmingham Theatre, the evening's entertainment also included "A new dance, called The Shipwreck'd Sailor," and "the Farce of The Deaf Lover." Signed Photograph, Studying "Un Ballo in Maschera"

Signed doubleweight photograph of the American mezzo-soprano, one of the pioneering generation of African-American opera and classical singers in the mid-twentieth century. She is shown curled up in an armchair, studying the score to Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, and has signed boldly at the foot. In very fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 24.8 cm).

"Medea" - 1959 Royal Opera House Program

Original program from La Divina's June 17, 1959 performance as Medea at the Royal Opera House. The production also starred Jon Vickers, Joan Carlyle, and Nicola Zaccaria. 4 pp. Light toning, especially to the upper edge, with one small water stain; overall in fine condition. 8.5 x 12.5 inches (21.6 x 31.8 cm).

This production traveled to London from Dallas, where it had been highly successful, in exchange for Covent Garden's mounting of Lucia di Lammermoor.

Typed Letter Signed to Lauritz Melchior

A touching typed letter signed from the German soprano to Danish-American tenor Lauritz Melchior, after the death of Melchior's wife, Kleinchen. 24 February, 1963. 1 p. Writing after Kleinchen's funeral, Lehmann offers her heartfelt sympathy: "I would have liked to tell you so many things, but my words were drowned in tears [...] I feel for you so deeply and I wish I could give you some comfort. The only comfort seems to me, that you know she is with you." Holograph corrections in blue ink throughout, signed "Lotte" at the foot. Two signed costume photographs of the Danish-American opera star, known as the quintessential Wagnerian tenor. He is shown in costume as Siegfried and as Canio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. He has signed each photograph "Lauritz" at the upper left and added "Siegfried" at the foot of the first photograph. The image as Siegfried is photographed by Carlo Edwards of New York and stamped on the verso. Some light edge wear; overall fine. Each 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.6 cm).

177. [Opera] [Opéra de Monte-Carlo] Gunsbourg, Raoul. (1860-1955).
Autograph Musical Quotation and Autograph Letter mentioning Grand Duke Vladimir and Fauré

ALS in French from the Romanian-born director, impresario, composer, and writer who led the Opéra de Monte-Carlo for nearly six decades.  On Parisian letterhead of the periodical Gil Blas, dated December 11, 1907, he writes: "Are you free to lunch tomorrow (or soon, today), Thursday?  If so, you would do Mme. Gunsbourg and me a great pleasure if you come to lunch with us..."  He goes on to list the other guests, who include "S. A. S. le Grand Duc Wladimir, M. M. Hébrard, Fauré" and others.  He gives his address and phone number and concludes, "a warm handshake and best wishes, Raoul Gunsbourg."  Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia was a patron of the arts and made frequent trips to Paris.  Letter folds, light spotting; otherwise in fine condition.  13.3 x 20.8 cm. Original 1861 Broadside from her First English Tour

Original broadside from the Theatre Royal Manchester, advertising the legendary prima donna in Lucia di Lammermoor, in "her first appearance out of London" on August 19, [1861].  Patti, only 18 years old at the time, appeared with the much older singers Hermine Rudersdorff, Maria Caradori, Giorgio Ronconi, and Joseph Tagliafico, among others. The week's performances also included La Traviata, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and L'Elisir d'Amore. Overall creases, chips, edge wear and a few small edge tears, but overall in very good condition for its age. 10 x 20 inches (25.7 x 50 cm).
