A rare group of four original souvenir program booklets from the 1921 and 1922 seasons of the "Grands Concerts Symphoniques Serge Koussevitzky," including the program from the first concert of the first season, together with one program booklet from the 1928 season. Dated November 10, December 8, and December 15, 1921; April 20, 1922 (with Prokofiev performing the premiere of his Third Piano Concerto); and June 14, 1928. The historic concert series, organized by Koussevitzky shortly before he began his tenure with the Boston Symphony, drew from the finest musicians available in Paris and particularly showcased works by Russian composers. The attractive programs feature Art Nouveau typography on the covers, and full-page portrait photographs of the composers and performers involved, as well as advertisements. Two programs include small inserts advertising other concerts. Autograph Note on Calling Card

Signed autograph note on the verso of a calling card, by the Austro-Hungarian composer and conductor, saying that an edition of his music is available at Verlag Theater an der Wien, giving the address and apologizing for not writing more. "It is five o'clock in the morning - I have worked all night."  In fine condition.  9.2 x 5.5 cm.

Franz Lehar was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century. His "Die Lustige Witwe" remains a popular favorite in opera houses.

"Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis" - Autograph Musical Manuscript of Liszt's Organ Transcription

Autograph musical manuscript in the hand of Franz Liszt for his organ transcription (S. 660/1, LW. E9) of the final chorale and fugue from Bach's cantata BWV 21, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis. 93 measures of music penned over 5 pp. Hand-ruled manuscript paper with 18 or 19 staves per page, oblong. Final page on a smaller trimmed piece of manuscript paper, bound in. Identified as Liszt's autograph and signed at the upper right of the first page by Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg, composer and close associate of Liszt. The manuscript gives two alternate endings for the piece, one on p. 4 marked "Fine" in blue pencil, and one on the final smaller page. Three-quarter red leather with gilt accents and marbled endpapers. Edge wear and some scratches to the leather, but structurally sound. Autograph Musical Quotation with Note

AMQS from the American composer and pianist, son of the important hymn composer Lowell Mason.  Mason has penned four measures for piano in A flat major, Allegro precioso.  Below the musical quotation, Mason writes to a Miss Hamilton: "I have written out the above musical autograph which I hope may be satisfactory... hoping to have the pleasure of seeing you at the 'Shoals' again during the present summer."  Dated Orange, N.J., June 5, 1888.  Some creases, a slight tear, and wrinkling; otherwise in fine condition.  14.5 x 22.5 cm, tipped to a mount 17.5 x 10 cm.

Octave-Etude - Autograph Musical Quotation

AMQS from the American composer and pianist, son of the important hymn composer Lowell Mason, and remembered for his Chopinesque piano compositions.  Four measures for piano, identified by the composer as his Octave-Etude, are penned in precise detail.  Beautifully signed and dated Orange, N.J., February 6, 1882.  On a folded sheet with one crease; otherwise in very fine condition.  20 x 12.8 cm.

"The Village Choir" - Original Engraving after Thomas Webster

Original woodcut engraving after Thomas Webster's ca. 1847 painting "The Village Choir," depicting a group of English village musicians singing and playing in a church balcony. The engraving is somewhat loosely modeled on the well-known painting, with the figures in the background and at the sides omitted, but the central figures of the man beating time, the girls and boys singing in the front row, and the cellist, bassoonist and clarinetist are clearly identifiable. Engraved by H. Bourne (caption barely visible at the lower right.) Losses to the edges, unevenly trimmed, with painted and varnish highlighting and mounted to card. 7.5 x 6 inches (19.5 x 15 cm).  See: British Museum 1872,1012.6249.
