Original portrait by Nadar of the Eminent French author, born Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, better known by the masculine pen name she adopted early in her career. An early feminist, she also earned a footnote in musical history as the longtime romantic companion of pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin. A few nicks to the mount and a few light spots to the image, otherwise very good. 6.5 x 10.5 cm.

The book is a collection of color images made with a Polaroid SX-70 towards the end of Kertész's life and his only work in color; a series of images of various objects taken on his windowsill with the city or sky as backdrop, reflecting on the passage of time and the death of his beloved wife, Elizabeth. They were also for us memories of the happy hours which your art gave us for many years; of the music which you enjoyed in our own house and so often in the concert hall, alone or with your quartet colleagues [...] Both our days are drawing to an end; it is the evening for both of us, but your music will accompany you, as my scholarship does me, as long as it is still day. As a small gift in return, I am taking the liberty of sending you the foreword to the 4th edition of my Napoleon biography..." As always it would be good to see you, if and when you come to NY. My new book will be out in March, and now I'm pretending to write stories while I wait. Yours, Philip."
