Opera
Autograph letter from the important Polish tenor, a major opera star of the late-nineteenth century, to the English musician and music critic Herman Klein. July 11, 1917. Writing shortly after the death of his brother, the bass Edouard de Reszke, Jean writes of his sadness and of his plans to publish his memoirs. Translated from the French, in part: "My dear friend, Thank you for correcting in the D. Telegraph the [news...] from the American press. Our dear Edouard is missed by all, and I have hundreds of letters and telegrams from the whole world, which I have to reply to and which prove how much he was appreciated; it is a consolation in my sadness. I have been tempted more than once to publish my artistic memoirs and I have started the work, which was interrupted by the war but which I hope to resume. I would have liked to undertake this with you, but I have a Polish writer [...] who I cannot dismiss." 2 pp. on a black-bordered card, together with the original envelope. Light edge wear to the envelope, but overall in very fine condition. 5.25 x 3.5 inches (13.5 x 8.8 cm). Read More...

145. [Opera] [Donizetti, Gaetano. (1797–1848)] Donzelli, Domenico. (1790–1873).
Two Arias for "Fausta" - Autograph Musical Manuscripts

Autograph musical manuscripts in a copyist's hand for two additional arias by Donizetti for his opera Fausta, as sung by the tenor Domenico Donzelli and signed by Donzelli on the first page of each. Titled: Adagio Nuovo scritto [per il ...] Sig. Donzelli da scegliersi a suo desio and Cabaletta per Crispo Atto II nuova scritta espressamente per il Sig. Donzelli. Undated [ca. 1833.] Scored for orchestra and solo voice (Crispo), with an empty choir part in the second aria. 11 pp. and 8 pp., on hand-ruled manuscript paper. On the first page of each, an autograph note in the hand of Domenico Donzelli reads: "Autografo di Donizetti." In fact, the manuscripts are in a copyist's hand: apparently, Donzelli intended "autografo" in the sense of an original composition by Donizetti. The numbers on the first page, 32 and 33, are likely catalog numbers from a theatre or the singer's collection.  Read More...

Two Autograph Letters, mentioning Verdi's Funeral

Two autograph letters to his family from the most famous dramatic tenor of the golden age and the creator of the historic role of Otello. In the first letter, dated April 16, 1899 and addressed to Tamagno's "adored children" (probably meaning his grandchildren), the tenor reports on his recent performances [in Naples], his frustration with the audience's demands for four encores and his failing health: "I find myself to be so exhausted after each performance that I am getting worried about my health." Revealing his disdain for nobility, he reports: "Their, not my, royal highnesses were present but after the first act the princess, who had not been feeling well, had to leave the theater. You can imagine my chagrin!" The second letter, dated [February] 26, 19[01] and addressed to "Dear Tuccia," reports that Tamagno will not be able to attend the large public funeral of Giuseppe Verdi, due to the rehearsals for Meyerbeer's Le prophète in Monte Carlo: "Will you please have a large wreath made and also a moving inscription to go with it? If I came to Milan I am sure that I would catch such a cold that I wouldn't be able to sing any more this winter." Tamagno goes on to mention the Opera Monte-Carlo director Raoul Gunsbourg and promises: "Soon I will ship to you the three large and beautiful rugs I bought in Paris." Each 3 pp. Light overall toning and folding creases; in fine condition. 4.25 x 7 inches (11 x 18 cm) and 5.5 x 8.5 inches (13.8 x 21.5 cm). Read More...
