Uncommon autograph musical quotation from the Italian opera composer, who has penned a detailed musical quotation for piano and voice with the text "Gia la notte s'avvicina..." and dated Paris, January 11, 1855. While we have not been able to identify the work from which the quotation is taken, the text is an excerpt from Metastasio's Cantate, also set by Beethoven and Rossini. Born into a poor immigrant Italian family as Giuseppe Guttoveggio, Paul Creston's music exemplifies the traits common in American Music of the first half of the twentieth century: it is distinctly tuneful, tonal in the modern American idiom and has a strong rhythmic sense.

Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne. [1932]. First Study Edition. Study score for the important twentieth-century composer's theme and variations for orchestra, composed in 1932 aboard the S. S. Ausonia. Gramophone calls the work "a bridge between Hindemith’s raucous 1920s manner and the graver, mature style of Mathis der Maler." [PN] B.S.S. 33468. 68 pp. Some damage to the spine at top and bottom, light overall toning and wear, but otherwise in very good condition. 6 x 9 inches (15 x 23 cm).

Autograph musical manuscript of one scene from the important French composer's opera Fervaal, signed and inscribed by the composer on the title page to a Mme. [Maurice] Sulzbach and dated 1893. Titled "Fervaal / Acte I - Scene II / Role de Guilhen," the manuscript is a vocal score of the soprano role of Guilhen only, with cues for the piano reduction of the orchestral score and for the part of Fervaal. Original grey wrappers printed in black and blue, with the ownership signature upper right of composer and conductor (and student of Franck), Francis Casadesus (1870 - 1954). Nicely bound in crimson cloth and marbled boards, markings in blue and graphite pencil, two pages with repaired tears, otherwise very good throughout. Fuld, p. 459.

A rare first edition of one of the most beloved works in the choral (and organ) repertory.

He is shown seated and has boldly signed and inscribed to tenor Lawrence Strauss (translated from the French): "To Mr. Lawrence Strauss, who sings French music with such skill and talent. He identifies the piece and signs at the foot. In green marker on translucent manuscript paper, trimmed at the foot. 9.5 x 6.5 inches (24.1 x 16.2 cm).
