Original menu and program from the legendary Cotton Club, featuring Cab Calloway and his orchestra, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Avis Andrews, Mae Johnson, The Chocolateers, and the Tramp Band, among others. 4 pp., with a striking color cover on heavy textured paper, showing African nudes dancing in a jungle, and 2 pp. of extensive drink and supper listings. With the club's second address (Broadway at 48th Street), indicating that this program dates from ca. 1936-1938. Wear and some small tears to the edges of the cover, small tears to the spine, and staining on the back cover; internal pages with light toning but intact; overall in good condition. 10 x 13.25 (25.7 x 33.6 cm) with cover; internal pages 12.5 x 9.75 inches (25 x 31.7 cm).

Autograph Letter regarding performances at the Olympia and Folies Bergère

An interesting ALS from the renowned French actress and cabaret singer who was immortalized in a number of works by prominent Belle Époche poster artists Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Cheret. In the somewhat difficult to decipher letter to a business associate, Guilbert mentions her upcoming performances at the Olympia and Folies Bergère in September, before chastising her correspondent about the terms of an agreement (translated from the French): "Regarding the 'publicity'... it would have been much more elegantly courteous not to remove that small correction, and to count on my good nature, which last year, despite your agreement, went otherwise." But, she goes, on, "All that isn't so serious, and I am certain that you will do the publicity, [and] that your interests will make sure you will not make this season the worst of the year." Undated. Le Panorama. La Journée de la Parisienne par Reutlinger [...] Paris Qui S'Amuse no. 4.

Paris: Ludovic Baschet. [1897?]. A striking collection of hundreds of photographs from the Reutlinger studio of Paris at the height of the Belle Epoque, published as a special issue of Le Panorama. The photographs include portraits of favorite female Parisian singers, actresses, and dancers with texts detailing their charms, including a 2-page spread on Yvette Guilbert; several sequences of boudoir photographs showing the morning and nighttime rituals of the charming "Parisienne," as well as her daily activities of shopping, bicycling, and lounging; a further section on ballet dancers; another boudoir sequence titled "Le Coucher de la Mariée"; and further photographs of exotic dancers and women posing as Greek statues. Two large fold-out plates at the end depict "Le Bal de l'Opéra" and "Le Grand Escalier de l'Opéra." [148] pp., unnumbered. Handsome oblong three-quarter leather binding with textured boards, leather front label, gold tooling including the initials "C.R." and the date "1897," gilt fore-edge, bright pastel/gold endpapers, and a ribbon bookmark. "Fred Robbins' One-Nite Stand" - Original 1940's Program

Original concert program from a performance of the great jazz vocalist as part of disc jockey Fred Robbins' "One-Nite Stand" concert series, undated, ca. 1947-8. Holiday appeared at the Saturday midnight concert with Bobby Tucker, Denzil Best, John Levey and Reme Palmeri. The program features several photographs of Holiday including two on the cover and back cover, a typewritten description of the program, and a text about DJ and promoter Robbins. Interestingly, Holiday's name is not printed on the cover where her photograph is left to tell the story. Read More...

1962 Civil Rights Benefit Concert - SIGNED PROGRAM

Original concert program from an April 29, 1962 NAACP benefit performance by the "Queen of Gospel," boldly signed on the cover by Jackson and her pianist, Mildred Falls. They appeared at the Kiel Opera House in St. Louis in a concert with a massed chorus, to benefit the St. Louis chapter of the NAACP. A quite scarce signed item from two integral personalities to the Civil Rights Movement, whose music inspired and strengthened the resolve of the crowds at the King rallies. 4 pp. 14 x 21.5 cm. Small tear from lower right corner, creased, a few pencil notations on verso, else fine.
