65. [Scottish Folk Music].
Leather-Bound Manuscript Book of Scottish Fiddle Tunes

A very interesting early-nineteenth-century manuscript book, containing music to approximately 180 traditional Scottish fiddle tunes. Bound in thick leather, the small oblong-format book bears the ownership signature of a James Singer on the first page. Although undated, the collection of tunes (most, but not all, of which are listed in the Traditional Tune Archive) suggests an origin in early-nineteenth-century Scotland. Several tunes cite the legendary fiddlers Niel Gow (1727-1807) or Robert Petrie (1767-1830) as their author. The majority of the tunes are strathspeys, a form of Scottish dance tune conceived for the fiddle and characterized by "scotch snap" rhythms. Heavy toning consistent with age; some water damage; titles of songs quite faded, but musical notation mostly very legible. Binding sturdy and intact, although with wear and cracks to the thick leather. 80 pp. 9 x 4 inches (22.5 x 10 cm). Overall in very good condition for its age and a potentially important record of Scottish music. Read More...

76. Kern, Jerome. (1885–1945) [Wood, Peggy. (1892–1978)].
Typed Letter Signed about Bella and Sam Spewack

TLS from the great songwriter addressed to "Peggy" (evidently the singer and actress Peggy Wood), regarding a stalled possible collaboration with playwrights Bella and Samuel Spewack. June 4, 1936. Text, in part: "[...] I'm puzzled by what the hell can be restraining those Spewacks from getting something down on paper. To my knowledge, they've been improvising their play since February and heaven knows how long before. [...] Not much of a chance of my being east before September. This might strike you as a volte face (as the learned fellows say) but i made the proviso with Gordon-Spewack and Co. that should I be tied up here -- as is now the case -- I will do my job if, as and when they cough up a script. I suppose the three of them are being blown about all over Europe at this writing, but should Sam and Bella still be in New York and you run into them, will you please indicate that I'm still in California and am thirsty." 1 p. 5 x 7.75 inches on personal letterhead.
