"440 Hz" - Signed Photograph with Autograph Musical Quotation

Original glossy promotional photograph of the important 20th-century composer and conductor, signed and inscribed by Boulez with an amusingly minimal autograph musical quotation of a whole note A, labeled "440 Hz." Boulez is shown photographed by Marion Kalter for Deutsche Grammophon, and has inscribed the photo at the foot to photographer Hermann Landvogt and dated June 19, 1994. A crisp signature and inscription; in very fine condition. 7 x 9.5 inches (17.8 x 24 cm).

Quartetto per Due Violini, Viola e Violoncello

In Venezia: Presso Antonio Zatta e Figli. [ca. 1790]. String quartet in E flat major by the prolific Italian composer and violinist, who published almost 600 works before 1800. Numbered "II" at the head. In two movements, an Allegro maestoso and a Rondo with two variations. 4 parts in portfolio. Letterpress title page with woodcut device. Music engraved throughout, without plate number. Each part 2 pp., numbered 4-5. Some damp staining; two large stains through all the parts. Some edge wear; one heavy fold to the spine of the violin 1 part; edges of parts reinforced with paper, and some corner losses repaired. In a later hardcover portfolio, half cloth with patterned paper sides, with heavy toning to the edges. Overall in very good condition. An interesting group of three autograph letters, two typed letters, and one autograph postcard from the important American composer to art lecturer and memoirist Rosamond ("Peggy") Bernier. Copland and Bernier met in Mexico City in 1936, when Copland was a young, penniless conductor and Bernier a sophomore at Sarah Lawrence; Bernier described the lifelong friendship that followed as "cloudless." Signed photograph of the Brooklyn-born composer who, more than any other figure, was instrumental in defining the “sound” of American classical music in the first half of the 20th century and in helping American composers to attain a new level of worldwide respectability. Bold signature dated 1981, on the photograph cover on a Library of Congress program from the 81st Birthday Concert, Coolidge Auditorium with Mezzo Soprano and 20th-century music champion Jan Degaetani and Pianist Leo Smit. 8 x 5.25 inches. Impressive signed photograph of the Romanian composer, violinist, and conductor, inscribed in 1939 to Cleveland Orchestra harpist Alice Chalifoux. He is shown in a dramatically-lit portrait by photographer Geoffrey Landesman and has inscribed at the head of the image "A Mademoiselle Alice Chalifoux, respecteux souvenir de Georges Enesco / 1939." Signed in pencil at the foot by the photographer and dated 1937. Matte print on a larger sheet; image size 7.25 x 9.25 inches (18.7 x 23.4 cm), total size 11 x 14 inches (27.8 x 35.3 cm). Slightly curled, with a few small edge creases and one chip to the edge of the image; overall in fine condition, certainly one of the loveliest examples we've encountered.  Read More...

Académie Nationale de Musique - Original 1914 Gala Program for the King and Queen of England

Stern. Original program from a gala performance given by the Académie Nationale de Musique in honor of King George V and Queen Mary of England on April 22, 1914. The performance featured excerpts from Vincent D'Indy's important symbolist opera L'Etranger and Camille Saint-Saëns' Les Barbares, as well as the complete first act of Reynaldo Hahn's ballet La Fête chez Thérèse, with each work conducted by its composer. The cover bears an attractive decorative border with cherubs and classical figures playing instruments, engraved by Stern after L. Le Lorrain. 3 pp. Bound with cord; deckle edges. In very fine condition. 6.5 x 9 inches (16.5 x 22.8 cm).
