154. [Instrumentalists] Rubinstein, Anton. (1829–1894).
Autograph Letter about Opera Librettos

A long and interesting autograph letter from the great Russian pianist and prolific composer to a female friend (addressed as "Frau Professorin,") sending best wishes from his wife and mentioning his views on appropriate texts for librettos. Responding to the correspondent's suggestion of an opera subject, Rubinstein writes: "The material about Penelope is very nice and would certainly be suitable for working up for the stage, but I personally do not like it since I am generally opposed to using ancient Greek and Roman texts today. I find they lack dramatic warmth and their types of thought and feeling are far removed from ours." He goes on to say that the correspondent's future son-in-law would be welcome to send him ideas for a libretto, but lays out a long list of unacceptable themes: "it must not be political or theological, nor specifically oriental, Greek, Roman, Polish, Hungarian, nor Russian, nor Jewish persecution or indeed anything which has been done too often, but rather something like Norma, Fidelio, Don Juan..." Rubinstein closes: "it would be best if he were to communicate with me by letter... Please do not take it amiss that I express myself so bluntly about the proposed material and material in general, and be assured of my continuing regard." Read More...

155. [Instrumentalists] Salzedo, Carlos. (1885–1961) [Chalifoux, Alice. (1908–2008)].
Collection of Autograph Letters

An interesting and touching collection of autograph letters from the great French harpist, composer, conductor, and teacher, to his student Alice Chalifoux. The eleven letters and postcards, dated between 1929 and 1948, represent a long and close friendship between teacher and student. In the earliest letter, Salzedo advises Chalifoux, whom he addresses as "Chère Comtesse," on how to do her taxes ("...don't correspond with your father about these deductions. You both will become crazy! Do the return yourself.") The later letters mostly deal with Chalifoux's students who have gone on to study with Salzedo, at Curtis or at his harp colony in Camden, ME; mentioned in particular are Marilyn Costello ("your phenomenal Costello"), Jane Barry, Janet Putnam ("she will go far"), Joan Mainzer, and Walter Pfeil ("What he has accomplished in less than 1/2 a year is extraordinary"), with Salzedo frequently praising Chalifoux's teaching: "I shall be happy to take care of your children. It is always a pleasure to be confronted with your splendid teaching." Offering in one letter of July 1948 to show Chalifoux a finer point of technique on their next meeting, Salzedo follows in the next letter: "I am so glad that you took my constructive criticisms as you did. You may count on my loyalty, admiration and inalterable friendship not to belittle your authority with your pupils." Most letters with original envelopes; with folding creases and light toning, overall in fine to very fine condition. Full details below. Read More...
