White House Invitation to Steinway for Horowitz's Golden Jubilee

An original engraved invitation from President and First Lady Carter bearing the gold embossed Presidential Seal inviting John H. Steinway, chairman of Steinway & Sons piano makers, to a White House concert held February 26, 1978 in honor of the great pianist Vladimir Horowitz's golden jubilee. Included is the gilt-edge concert program, listing all the pieces performed by Horowitz. Accompanied by an invitation for dinner at the White House on April 1, 1969 from President and First Lady Nixon, with the original envelope and a small card noting that the dress is “white tie.” 7pp.  8vo and 12mo.  Read More...

Autograph signature from the American pianist known for his piano trio performances with Isaac Stern and Leonard Rose, and for his mastery of German repertory. On a page from an August 8, 1958 program of the Boston Symphony at the Tanglewood Shed, Istomin has signed above his name. He performed Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto with the BSO, under Charles Munch. Left edge rough; otherwise fine. 7.5 x 10.25 inches (18.8 x 26.2 cm).

Visiting Card with Autograph Inscription

An original visiting card from the great Hungarian violinist and Brahms collaborator, with an autograph inscription on the verso granting admission to one of his concerts for the English music critic Herman Klein. Joachim has addressed the visiting card on the recto in pencil to Herr Moser, likely his student and early biographer, the violinist Andreas Moser (1859–1925). Continuing in pencil on the verso, he has written (translated from the German): "Mr. Klein, a correspondent for one of the [...] London newspapers, must be admitted, because he has traveled [...] from London...". Heavy fold, almost torn, at the edge, with two archival tape repairs; somewhat smudged; overall very good. 3.75 x 2 inches (9.2 x 5.2 cm).

Autograph signature from the great pianist, perhaps the single most prominent and influential piano pedagogue ever to teach in America. She has signed boldly on a large album leaf, dated August 21, 1931 and added: "In kind remembrance of this evening and my husband playing in the beautiful Hollywood Bowl." Lhevinne's husband, Josef Lhevinne, had appeared that evening with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Toning; upper edge slightly rough; overall fine. 8 x 12 inches (21 x 31 cm).

Autograph signature from the great violinist, boldly signed on the front of a September 28, 1937 concert program. Menuhin performed with Ferguson Webster in Oakland, California, in a program that included Tartini-Kreisler, Bach, Spohr, and Sarasate. Ownership signature at the head; horizontal and vertical folding creases and some bands of irregular toning; overall in fine condition. 6 x 9 inches (15.3 x 23 cm).

Signed Bechert of New York photograph of the supreme Russian violinist, noted for his fine interpretations of the unaccompanied Bach sonatas and Romantic works. Milstein is shown playing his instrument, and has inscribed at the upper right "To my dearest friend Anna / Nathan / Jan. 1947." Handsomely matted; seemingly affixed to the mount below the mat, several small edge tears and chips, but a crisp image and overall otherwise in very good condition. Very interesting original concert program from the December 30, 1924 Piano Festival held at the Metropolitan Opera House. Conducted by Walter Damrosch, the incredible ensemble of pianists performing included Harold Bauer, Alexander Brailowsky, Carl Friedberg, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Myra Hess, Ernest Hutcheson, Ethel Leginska, Mischa LEvitzki, Josef Lhevinne, Guy Maier, Yolanda Mero, Elly Ney, Guiomar Novaes, Lee Pattison, Olga Samaroff, Ernest Schelling, Germaine Schnitzer, Alexander Siloti and Zygmunt Stojowski. The program, some of which featured all of the pianists all playing at the same time (!) included works by Saint-Saëns, Schumann, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rossini, and Schubert. Schubert's Marche Militaire, with all 19 pianists, concluded the program. 32 pp., including many pages of advertisements. Staple binding partially detached; one small corner chip; otherwise in fine condition. 6.75 x 10 inches (17 x 25.5 cm).

Autograph signatures from the complete Roth Quartet, the Armenian tenor Armand Tokatyan, and the Austrian pianist Paul Weingarten, signed together on an album leaf. The Roth Quartet (Feri Roth, Jeno Antal, Ferenc Molnar and Albert van Doorn) have added a musical quotation of two measures from the fourth movement of Brahms' Quartet no. 1 and dated Mondsee, 1931. Rare Original 1892 Concert Program for the benefit of the victims of the Russian famine of 1891

A rare original concert program from the important Russian pianist, dated January 8, 1892. In the Great Hall of the Russian Noble Assembly, Rubinstein performed his Piano Concerto no. 5, his Fantasia in C, three Romances and his Caprice Russe. Vocal duets were performed by E Lavrovskaya and M. Maharina, with the orchestra conducted by V. I. Safonov. The proceeds of the concert were given in benefit of the victims of the infamous Russian famine of 1891–1892.
