Interesting prototype for an in-store display box, made for Bowie's 1987 album Never Let Me Down. Created by the art studio of EMI as a prototype, the box is constructed of cardboard and acetate and incorporates elements of the artwork from the album into a three-dimensional design. Together with an original fax from the marketing department to representatives of the record label in its offices around the world, describing several different merchandising items for Never Let Me Down including the display box, stickers, a poster, and a mobile. 15 x 15 x 6 inches. Striking large original photograph of the great songwriter and Nobel laureate, captured in a recording studio in New York City in August 1963. Dylan is seen from behind, holding his guitar in a largely empty room. Hunstein, known for his many iconic images of Dylan, made the photograph while a staff photograph from CBS Records. Gelatin silver print, signed by Hunstein in pencil on reverse, with signed label attached to the reverse. 16 x 20 inches.

George Gershwin's Song-book, SIGNED

New York: Random House. 1932. First edition. One of 300 numbered copies, this being #123, signed by Gershwin and the illustrator Alajalov and featuring many of the composer's greatest songs, including "Fascinating Rhythm", "Swanee", "Strike Up the Band" and "I Got Rhythm". Small folio. 167 pp. Each of the 18 published songs is preceded by a full-page color plate by Alajalov, followed by Gershwin’s original piano score, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, as well as separate sheet music for "Mischa, Yascha, Toscha, Sascha" in the pocket at the rear paste down. Publisher's full black morocco, rebacked, blocks of color variance and toning to boards, additional gift inscription on the limitation page, dated 1942. Top edge gilt, clean and, overall, a good copy.

"Fine and Mellow" - Original Sheet Music

New York: Edward B. Marks. 1940. First. Rare original sheet music to the legendary vocalist's song "Fine and Mellow," featuring an graphically striking cover design with an inset photograph of Billie, advertising the work "As Inimitably Sung by Billie Holiday." In fine condition.

"Fine and Mellow" was first recorded by Holiday for Commodore in 1939, but was most famously performed in the 1957 TV special "The Sound of Jazz" with a line-up of other jazz legends including Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge.

An interesting collection of 65 original jazz record catalogs, flyers, and brochures, dating from the 1940's to 60's, many with the stamp of the Yerba Buena Music Store in Oakland, California. The collection includes catalogs from many of the significant jazz labels of the era such as Blue Note, Columbia, and RCA Victor, as well as a several brochures and flyers relating to the West Coast Revival of New Orleans jazz, including the first catalog of Jazz Man Records and a flyer for three recordings of Lu Watters and the Yerba Buena Jazz Band on the Good Time Jazz Records label. Also included are 6 copies of the magazine supplement Jazz Records and 1 copy of Jazz Music, the International Jazz Magazine, published in London. Not only a fascinating glimpse at records of the era, the collection also features many boldly designed and graphically interesting brochures.
